Letter To Family
Dear Host Family,
my name is Helena and I was born on the 13th of September, 1993 in Straubing in Germany. I grew up in a little village in the ‘Bavarian Forest’ together with my parents, my two years younger brother Ferdinand, our dog and a lot of cats. I’m very happy about that, because we had a big garden and so I spent the whole day in it or visited other farms.
After the divorce of my parents in 2005, my mum moved to a city, which is in the near of Munich, with Ferdinand and me. My dad stayed but my brother and me visit him every vocation.
Here we’re living in the top part of our house and downstairs my grandmother Martha, with whom I’ve a close relationship. I´m glad that my whole family agreed on the programm and supports me so that I can spend a year as an Au Pair in the USA. As I have also a very close relationship to my mum, her opinion is very important for me. I could never do something that she isn´t fond of.
I think that the most important question is: Why do I want to be an au pair?
I went 12 years to school now and especially the last two years were very exhausting because I had to do a lot of exams to get my A-levels. In this time I said to myself when this is over I want to do and see something completely new. So I thought it would be my chance to get to know a new country and culture. And because I had always planned to visit one day America and I love children I decided to combine this and become an Au-Pair.
Since the elementary school it is my aim to become one day a teacher, so to be an Au-Pair let me gain a lot of great experiences. My friends are doing work and travel or hotel work, but I had never something else in mind. I love children and taking care of them makes me absolutely happy, as well as seeing them smiling, their enthusiasm if they learned something new and their imaginative idea of the world.
It would also be great to improve my English skills and become more open-minded by spending an exciting year abroad. I am sure that during my year in America, I will have unforgettable experiences, which would be useful in my whole life.
Since Katja, our lovely neighbor daughter, is 5 years old I take care of her. Because she lives not here in Karlsfeld, but in the village of my father, I do it only in vocation or sometimes on weekend. Every time when she notices that I’m there, she comes over and really shine because she’s so happy to see me. Than we enjoy spending time together. Mostly we go into the garden and play there or tinker something and when there is bad weather we stay in the house and bake cakes or paint together. It’s always very funny and it never gets boring. It fascinates me to see how she grows up and become more independent. Meantime I know her now since 5 years and I hope that many years will follow.
When I visited my Dad I also helped his girlfriend Kathrin, who gives courses for children, in which she tinkers something with them and brings them closer to the nature. On average there were between 7 and 10 children, sometimes even more, at the age between 4 and 12. We produced a soap or marmalade, or we built little wooden boats. It was always a lot of fun! Also because it was so amazing to see how every child has his own different personality.
A family should choose me as their au pair because I am a very warm-hearted person who loves children. I am always honest, fair and I like to laugh. Of course, working with children isn’t always easy and sometimes it could be very hard, but I am able to stay calm even in stressful situations. Furthermore I am friendly, flexible, creative, self-confident and responsible, which are talents that would be useful for being an au pair.
To be an au pair is not just a job for me, in which I finish work and turn my back at the children/family until the next day. In my opinion to be an au pair is to become a member of a family and I would love to spend time with you even in my free time. The most important point why you should choose me as your next au pair is that I want to be a role model but also like a friend or better like a sister for your children. It is very important for me that they can trust me and that they know that they can come to me with any problems, because I will always help them. All in all I want to be such an important person for your children and for you.
In conclusion, I would like to thank you very much for taking your time to get to know me better. I am looking forward to being an Au Pair and also a family member in your family and to spend a great and unforgettable year.
I am really looking forward to hearing from you soon.
With best wishes from Germany,
Helena
