I have three younger siblings. The two youngest are eleven and thirteen years younger than me. From the time I was thirteen until I graduated from high school at the age of seventeen I was charged with helping my mother with my little sister and baby brother. On school days I woke them up, got them dressed, made their breakfast and got them to school or daycare on time. On weeknights I changed diapers, fixed dinners, gave baths, got them ready for bed and did their laundry. Some weekends when my mother had to work I also watched them the whole day. Now when I go home to visit I help them with their homework, fix dinner, and make sure they are in bed when they are supposed to be.
In addition to taking care of the tiny people in my own family, in high school I also spent on Saturday night every month watching the neighbor's three children ages eleven, five and three months. I made sure they had dinner, played every board game imaginable, helped them with art projects and made sure they were in bed when they were supposed to be. I also cleaned the house before their parents came home. This is the only childcare job that I have ever been payed for, but the girls were always so sweet that it never really felt like work.
