Letter To Family

Dear Family,


My name is Katie. I am a 22 year-old (female) American student. I am currently in my last couple quarters of finishing my BA degree in Cultural Anthropology in Davis, which is in northern California. I was born and raised in southern California though. I live about 20 minutes from the beach, which I very much enjoy going to.

I come from a family of 6: My parents, Flo and Dan, are the most loving parents I know. My mother is an elementary school teacher and my father is a computer tech. I have 2 sisters and one brother. My eldest sister Summer, is 30 years old and is a preschool teacher in Irvine. My older brother, Tyler, is 27 years old and has a guitar making degree and an amazing band. My younger sister, Hayley, is 20 years old. She's currently attending a community college in our hometown. She's also my best friend.

I haven't made up my mind whether I want to go to graduate school to get my masters. I'm considering teaching part time but I need an adventure. My major is cultural Anthropology so being abroad would definitely be beneficial. I want to learn about different cultures and spending a year or so abroad would be amazing for me.

My first language is English. I first started learning Spanish in 3rd grade and again at my University. I have at least a years worth of knowledge in Spanish. In High School, I took French for three years. I can understand some of it but not very much. C'est la vie!

I would love to learn another language though. I'm not afraid to be immersed into a completely different culture, country, and language. I learn fairly quickly.

When it comes to child care experience, I have looked after children in both formal and informal contexts. Back when I was living at home, I'd often go to school with my mom and help her teach and look after the kids. I spend a good chunk of my life in girl scouts and my mom was also a leader. I would sometimes lead groups when my mother needed a break, which I loved doing. When I was a girl scout, I took babysitting classes, as well as CPR and first aid classes. Two years ago, I took a child development class and my college, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I have four very energetic cousins aged 2-9. I've babysat them on and off since they were born. They are the sweetest kids I've ever met and I love being around kids. I can honestly say that I love looking after kids. My older sister's friends have kids as well that I watch if they ever have get togethers.

When it comes to leisure, I take pleasure in the simple things in life. I enjoy being outdoors, being with my friends, going for walks, visiting places I have not been to, and reading a good book. I also enjoy writing fictional stories. If I can't be outdoors, you'd probably find me inside with a book or playing board games and video games. I love riding my bike anywhere that I can.

As far as preferences are concerned, I am looking for a live-in arrangement with a host family, that would be happy to have me stay with and work for them for at least 6 months. I would also prefer looking after children aged between 3 to 10 years.

I've never been an Au Pair but it's something I've always wanted to do. I've been babysitting since I was 16 years old. I started out babysitting for the kids in my neighborhood and my little sister and her friends. As I got older, I started looking after my cousins and family friend's children. The most I've looked after at a time is four kids. That's probably the maximum amount of kids I can handle at any given time. I can also look after pets if that is needed.
