Letter to the family

My name is Nia, I’m 20 years old, and I currently live in the United States. I come from a big, loving family, and I’m the oldest of three siblings. Growing up with two younger brothers and many cousins has made caring for children a natural part of my life. I’m excited about the opportunity to become your Au Pair and be a supportive, reliable, and fun part of your family.

I want to become an Au Pair because I believe it’s a beautiful way to explore the world while doing something I genuinely love—working with children. I’m especially passionate about cultural exchange. As an African American woman, I want to share the rich and unique culture that I come from, while also learning more about yours. Too often, people only see one version of what it means to be American or Black, and I want to help broaden that perspective through connection, respect, and shared experience. I also look forward to improving my language skills and hopefully becoming fluent in Spanish or learning a new language entirely.

You should host me because I bring both experience and heart to this role. I’ve worked with children of all ages—from newborns to teenagers—through various positions such as babysitting, classroom support, after-school tutoring, and as a summer camp counselor. I’ve been working with children consistently since my freshman year of high school and continue to do so every summer. I’ve taught using set curricula, helped with homework, led creative activities, and built strong, trusting bonds with every child I’ve worked with. I take pride in being dependable, patient, fun, and nurturing.

I also have practical skills that would benefit your household. I’m CPR and first aid certified, have a valid driver’s license, and love to cook—cooking is truly a passion of mine. I’m very organized and timely, and I’m great at building routines that keep kids engaged and happy. I can also support your children with schoolwork, especially in English, math, and beginner to intermediate Spanish.

Thank you so much for considering me as a potential addition to your family. I would be honored to grow, learn, and care for you. I look forward to the opportunity to speak further and hopefully meet you and your wonderful children.

Experience

While I haven’t officially worked as an Au Pair yet, I have extensive experience caring for and educating children of all ages. Since my freshman year of high school, I’ve worked in multiple roles involving childcare—starting as a counselor’s assistant in classrooms, continuing with freelance babysitting, tutoring at a K–12 school, and working as a summer camp counselor. I’ve taken care of infants as young as one month old all the way up to teenagers, and I’ve helped with everything from feeding and diaper changes to homework help and leading educational activities.

Becoming an Au Pair abroad is something I deeply want because it combines my love for children with my passion for cultural exchange. I want to experience life in a new country, not just as a tourist, but as a meaningful part of a family. I’m excited to share my culture, especially as an African American woman, and to break stereotypes while learning about a new culture, language, and way of life. Being an Au Pair would allow me to grow personally, gain global perspective, and build real relationships that cross borders.
