Letter to the family

Dear Future Host Family,

My name is Hera Jóhanna, and I am a dedicated and compassionate law student from Iceland with a deep love for caregiving, cultural exchange, and new experiences. I am writing to express my strong interest in becoming your Au Pair or caregiver for the elderly.

I have extensive hands-on experience working with babies, children, elderly individuals, and people with disabilities. I’ve completed certified first aid training as well as parenting classes, and I’ve always had a natural instinct for care and connection. In early 2023, I worked as a personal assistant through the NPA program, where I supported a woman in her 60s with tasks ranging from home care and errands to helping with her grandchildren and organizing her schedule. This role taught me not only practical caregiving skills, but also how to be a supportive, trustworthy companion.

I am excited to become an au pair or caregiver because I genuinely enjoy helping others and learning from people of all ages. I’ve previously been an exchange student in Canada, and I’m about to begin another exchange in Germany — I love immersing myself in new cultures and building meaningful connections. I’m single, have no siblings or children, and I’m very flexible and independent, which allows me to fully focus on the needs of the people I care for.

You should consider hosting me because I bring a blend of warmth, responsibility, and strong academic discipline. I graduated with honors and have consistently been a grade A student, which reflects my dedication and work ethic in everything I do. I’m highly organized, compassionate, and always eager to contribute positively wherever I go.

In my free time, I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and swimming — I’m very active and creative. I love animals, photography, and arts and crafts, and I bring a positive, upbeat energy to every home and environment. I’m also incredibly patient and understanding — qualities that are essential when caring for both children and the elderly.

Thank you so much for considering me. I would be honored to become a part of your home and provide reliable, kind-hearted support to your family.

Warm regards,
Hera Jóhanna

Experience

Although I have never officially worked as an au pair, I have many years of hands-on experience in both childcare and eldercare. I began babysitting at the age of 13, and some of those roles involved living with families during the summer, where I was fully responsible for the daily care of a two-year-old. These early experiences taught me the value of routine, patience, and creativity in caregiving.

As a long-time member of the scouts, I also served as a scout troop leader, caring for children aged 5 to 10 — including children with special needs. This role strengthened my leadership and communication skills, and helped me understand how to create inclusive, safe, and fun environments for all children.

Later in life, I expanded my caregiving experience through my work as a personal assistant (NPA) for individuals with physical disabilities. One of my clients was a woman in her 60s, whom I supported with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, running errands, and occasionally helping with her grandchildren. I also worked with a young man my own age who was physically disabled, offering support in both practical and social aspects of his life. These roles required a great deal of empathy, discretion, and reliability.

In addition, I have cared for my own grandparents when they became ill, which was both challenging and deeply meaningful. I’ve also volunteered in a retirement home and participated in a buddy program designed to provide companionship and support to elderly residents. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the wisdom and stories older people carry with them, and how valuable meaningful companionship is at every stage of life.

I would love the opportunity to become an au pair or caregiver for the elderly abroad because I am passionate about helping people and learning from different cultures. Living and working in another country offers a unique chance to build deep, personal connections across generations while continuing to grow personally and professionally. I find caregiving to be incredibly fulfilling, and I believe my background, compassion, and positive energy would make me a great fit for a host family looking for someone responsible, kind, and engaged.
