Letter to the family

Hello, my name is Steven. I am currently a university student majoring in German Education at Grand Valley State University. I am hoping that becoming an Au Pair will help me to further my knowledge of German, as well as prepare me for my own career of teaching German/English to students. I've taken several courses on how to effectively teach young children, but my specialization is language education, so if you're looking for an English tutor then I feel confident that I can deliver on that. When it comes to other subjects like math, science, history, etc. my knowledge is mostly limited to what I've retained from high school, but I'm confident in my abilities to teach children in these areas at the elementary level or even some at a higher level if needed. In my professional experience, I've worked part-time in multiple schools as both an afterschool caregiver and a daytime cleaner. These jobs gave me a lot of experience around young children and taught me a lot about myself in terms of how I feel working with children. Long story short, I love working one-on-one with a kid or small group of kids and helping them to understand the tasks they are working on both inside and outside of school. I mentioned that I also worked as a daytime cleaner, where I was responsible for cleaning up the school, most specifically the cafeteria, which I'm sure you can imagine was a very dirty job everyday. As far as my academic career, I was a member of my high school's mock trial team 3 years in a row where I learned what it means to be a part of a team, to rely on others to pull their weight, and of course how to be reliable myself and what could happen if someone wasn't reliable. At my university, I was awarded 2nd place for my personal narrative essay in a campus wide writing contest and I plan to submit another (hopefully award winning) paper this upcoming winter semester. I am also currently sitting in as a student teacher in a high school German class as a requirement for one of my classes.

Experience

I have never worked as an Au Pair before, but please see my "Letter to the family" to read about my professional and educational experience relevant to working with your kids. When I found out that this was a job people like me can apply for I thought it seemed like a perfect match for me. I have always wanted to work abroad, work with children, and have the opportunity to teach kids before I begin my long-term career. I do not believe that a college education is enough to prepare me for my line of work, and I would prefer to get some first hand experience in a field like this. As an American, language education is a very niche career to pursue, and I don't feel as though I can be trained as much as I'd like to be here in the States. I am very passionate about education and I genuinely love being able to answer questions for other people and hopefully get them to understand the topic they're asking me about on a deeper level. To do this, I feel as though it's important for me to work as an Au Pair and Live-In Tutor so I may receive a well rounded set of skills for my students in the future.
