Letter to the family

Nice to meet you all!
안녕하세요?

I am Gesine. I am a German university student majoring in Korean and Japanese linguistics and will finish my Bachelor in Spring 2024. Starting Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 I wish to study for a master’s degree at a Korean university. To bridge the time between my Bachelor's and Master’s degree I would like to spend 6 to 12 months as an Au-Pair in South Korea, starting in Spring 2024.

I have enjoyed working with children for a long time. As such I have been babysitting, aiding as an assistant coach for children at my sports club and volunteered at a kindergarten in Japan for 11 months. In summer 2022 I have risen to the challenge of teaching German to Ukrainian refugees during a 3-week summer school program.

Furthermore ‎I enjoy the idea of living in a host family. I have been in a short exchange program before, living as a high school student in a host family in Canada, and have learned a lot from that experience.
To me learning about a country and culture in a family is quite different from living in a hotel or dormitory.
Getting a better, more sensitive feeling for a culture and language through this can be a great asset, but I also appreciate the certainty, that I won't get lonely or isolated so easily.

Let’s get along!

Experience

Since I was a teenager I have been babysitting several children in my neighborhood between the age of 4 to 9, commonly tasked with preparing the children for and tucking them into bed, picking them up from school, assisting them with homework, going on trips together (for example to the swimming pool) etc. At the same time I have also been volunteering as a co-trainer for equestrian vaulting in my local sports club, coaching children between 3 and 10 years. Due to restrictions during Covid and me moving to a different city for my studies I unfortunately had to give up both activities.

From September 2018 to August 2019 I have spent 11 months as a volunteer at a Japanese kindergarten in Hiroshima. There I’ve had the opportunity to receive guidance from knowledgeable teachers and gain valuable experience - especially in regards to raising children in a different culture and language from mine and the opportunity to spend 2 months in the infant group of children aged 4 to 18 months.

In summer 2022 I have risen to the challenge of teaching German to Ukrainian refugees during a 3-week summer school program, organized by my university, which has been both an extremely challenging and incredibly rewarding experience. During the three weeks, in a team of 3 teachers (for 10 students, aged 10 to 14) we designed our own exercise sheets, planned out study sessions, did weekly excursions with the students to places such as the market, the zoo, or the soccer stadium and organized events such as baking waffles or painting soccer tricots, all the while incorporating exercises to practice German.
