Letter to the family

Dear family, first of all it's a great pleasure to meet you! My name is Sofia, I'm 20 years old and I'm currently enrolled in the University of Bologna studying Business and Economics. I was born in Italy but my mother is from the United States (Chicago), so every year I go visit my family in the States; I think it's a great fortune for me because other than speaking fluently both Italian and English I have learned from a young age about many different cultures and I believe it has helped me to develop my own opinions and have an open mind towards many different subjects.
I love travelling and I have been travelling for as long as I can remember, but when I turned 18 years old I knew I wanted to do something a bit more meaningful, so I decided to go volunteer in Thailand; I was there to teach English in a primary school and to help out in an orphanage, it was a once in a lifetime experience! it was overwhelming to encounter such a different way of life and to see so many people struggling but I'm truly grateful for all of the amazing children and volunteers that have had such a great impact on my life.
The experience was so amazing that I decided to volunteer again in the Philippines the following year, it was an equally wonderful experience, the people there were just so welcoming and positive and they thought me how to enjoy the smallest and simplest things in life, and I know it sounds like such a cliché but I really mean it!
In my opinion the best feelings in life come from time spent with other people, that's why for the last 3 years I have been helping a girl who is currently in elementary school with her homework every week and even though I might be stressful at times and it requires a lot of patience she made me so proud with the progress that she has made and that's just and amazing feeling for me.
I also have a lot of experience babysitting children on the weekends, especially bilingual children, and I spent 4 years starting when I was 14 as a summer camp volunteer and last year I volunteered as a cook in a Boy Scouts winter camp.
I hope these few words can help you get a better understanding of who I am and I can't wait to meet you guys and start this new and exciting experience with your family!
xoxo
-Sofia

Experience

Starting at age 14 I volunteered for four years in a summer camp with kids, then I often work as a babysitter, especially for bilingual children and I helped a girl in elementary school with her homework every week for three years. I also volunteered in Thailand for one month teaching English in an elementary school and helping out in an orphanage; the following year I volunteered for one month in the Philippines teaching English in kindergarten and teaching math to children from 8 to 10 years old.I want to start this new experience because I would love to truly get to know a new country, and by living with a family I can really immerse myself in their way of life, also I want to experience how families may differ around the world, so that I can learn from them and hopefully share this experience with my family back home. I also want to spend time with new people and be of any kind of help that they need.
I expect this experience to teach me new points of view, new traditions and new values that I'm sure will help me grow, I also expect this experience to be challenging in a positive way because I'll be able to get to know new aspects of myself thanks to the various people and various environments I will encounter. Hopefully I can also share my experiences and my culture with the family I'll be living with.
