Letter to the family

Dear host family,

My name is Jackson and I am a 23-year-old from Toronto, Canada. I am hoping to gain new experiences and see all that the world has to offer, and I hope that I can find this opportunity by joining your family.

While I have always loved travel and have been fortunate to see much of the world, I now desire to live somewhere new and become immersed in a different way of life. I would love to become like a big brother to your children, all while adapting and growing in my new environment. I have my TEFL certification as well, meaning that I am qualified to teach English as a second language. My undergraduate degree is in philosophy and creative writing, and I would gladly share any knowledge I have or help with any kind of schooling that I can.

I come from a mixed family, with one older sister, and three older step siblings. I have a very close relationship with my mother, who has always been a great source of strength and support for me. I was raised in Toronto, but when I went to University, my parents move to the countryside, while I stayed in the city. Now that I have graduated, I am living with my mother in a small town called Port Perry. Growing up, I also had a very close relationship with my neighbor, who was about 8 years younger than me. I was her babysitter at first, but eventually I would see her daily and she became like a little sister to me, in part because she came from a somewhat broken family.

Experience

I have taken care of kids at many points throughout my life. I was a sort of mentor/brother figure for my neighbor since the day she was born, providing not only frequent babysitting, but also being apart of each other's daily lives. She had a troubled home, so I was able to provide a level of support and emotional safety, and it felt like she was part of our family.

I have also provided babysitting services to many other families throughout High School and up to the present, as I get along very easily with kids and enjoy working with them. I do not have a preferred age range, and have helped take care of infants, and have also been a support for older kids and preteens.

I have experience helping children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities. I have been a long term helper for a close family friend who's daughter has severe Down's syndrome, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and general issues caused from tumors in her brain. Caring for her requires maintaining a careful liquid-based diet, providing company and activity, and ensuring that she is physically safe. I have also volunteered at a High School for teenagers with various kinds of physical and mental disabilities. I was working as a teacher's helper, essentially, and was informed about each students particular needs and how to meet them. It was a very rewarding experience, and it taught me a lot about how to help those who struggle to make themselves understood.

I have volunteered, also, at a school in Laos, where I helped teach English to a young classroom using picture books, limited conversations, charades and other physical activities.

Lastly, I have worked as a camp counselor for the summer program my High School ran for younger children. I enjoyed this experience immensely, as it was just very rewarding to organize and help the kids perform their own musical.

I am happy to provide references upon request. I'll also note that I have taken training in CPR and First Aid, though my certification has expired this year and I have not yet renewed it.
