Letter to the family

Dear Host Family,

My name is Tess, I’m from Germany and currently working in the emergency department for adults. Before that, I worked as a pediatric nurse for several years, and during my current job, I’ve realized just how much I miss working with children which is one of the reasons I’ve decided to become an Au Pair again.

I’ve already had the chance to be an Au Pair twice, once in New Zealand after high school, and again in London in 2019. Both experiences were truly special to me. I loved being part of a family, building strong bonds with the kids, and learning from a different everyday life. I also did an internship at a secondary school in England and spent a semester studying in Córdoba, Spain. I began studying English and Spanish at university which I’ve paused for now but I’m planning to return and eventually become a teacher.

I grew up in a fun and loving family, even though my parents are separated. That’s why I really appreciate and support all kinds of family models, including single parent households. I’m super close with my siblings, and godmother to my niece.

I’m active, responsible, and easygoing: I love sports, the outdoors, and sharing day-to-day moments with kids. With my mix of professional experience and a warm, open personality, I believe I’d be a great support for your family.

Experience

I’ve had the chance to work as an Au Pair twice: once in New Zealand and once in London, both times living with families and caring for two children between the ages of 2 and 8. During university, I also worked regularly as a babysitter for several families, sometimes looking after children as young as 6 months and 4 years for entire weekends. In one of those families, one of the children had special needs, which taught me even more patience, empathy, and flexibility.

Thanks to these different experiences, I’ve developed a strong sense of where support is needed in a household, even without detailed instructions. I’m proactive, caring, and have a good overview of family life, especially when things get a bit hectic.

I usually adjust quickly to new places, especially once I’ve had the chance to build a small social circle (getting a gym membership or have a job in a cafè next to it for example, always helps.) One of my personal goals is to improve my Spanish, so living abroad with a local family feels like the perfect opportunity to combine my love for working with children and my passion for languages.
