Letter to the family

Dear lovely host family,

I am Renée, nice to meet you! I am 23 and my family lives in a small town close to Frankfurt, Germany. We often say there are more cows than people, which sounds like a joke but it is kind of true. I am currently living and studying in Tilburg, Netherlands, where I've been working on getting my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology.
Since my study was in English and everyone easily switches when they notice you are a foreigner, I had a hard time learning the Dutch language sufficiently next to my study but now, I am ready to make it happen!

Experience

As a long-time tutor, I have a lot of experience with how kids learn and how they like to be challenged just the right amount. I try to always find the right learning method for every individual child and after a while, it shows not only in their results but also in a more positive attitude towards approaching the subject. Seeing them make progress and how excited they are when their hard work pays off and they even receive a higher grade than before, that brings me a lot of joy!
A more holistic approach to tutoring presented itself to me in the form of a 6-week summer course teaching German to refugee children and their moms (who were not intended to participate but joined the party half-way through). This was not just teaching but also picking the families up, taking them shopping, and translating letters they had gotten. Most importantly for me, however, was creating a space for them to play. These were Eritrean children that were still highly traumatized and very serious. I saw them loosen up over time and flourish during the games we played and I was not only very touched by that but I also like to believe that I contributed by creating the space.
Lastly, I gained a fair amount of experience by having a much younger brother (6 years younger) and a godmother with twins (10 years younger) that I supported throughout the years in all kinds of stages of their lives. I was practicing walking with one of my twin cousins and I really was lucky enough to experience her first steps!
