Letter to the family

Hi there :)

My name is Hanaan. I am a second-year occupational therapy student and I hope to specialize in occupational therapy for pediatrics one day. I absolutely love children and coming from a huge family with over 20 cousins, spending time and engaging with children has always come naturally. I au-paired for a beautiful 4-year-old with down syndrome in the past year and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I am a compassionate, loving, organized, patient, and fun human being who wants to explore the world and practice a bit of my expertise in child development and care. I want to offer help to families in need, learn about different cultures, languages and share a bit of my own South African culture with the world.

I am a quick learner and a problem solver who will bring a nurturing and calming effect to the environment I work in.

Experience

Tutoring:
I assisted students in high school with subjects they had difficulties in - I teach them study methods, how to take notes, and work productively. I offer assistance with homework, projects, and exam preparation.

Childcare experience:
I have childcare and special needs experience. I’ve au-paired for an Italian-English family with three children (7 years old, 4 years old, and 2 years old). Their middle daughter had Down syndrome thus, most of my time spent with the family was spent looking after the 4-year and implementing her therapy plans. This included learning through play and working on her language and speech (reading, doing vocabulary flashcards, and learning words phonically). I assisted with bathing, feeding, and dressing and managed tasks to help her become independent in her activities of daily living. It was a fulfilling experience wonderful watching her grow and slowly develop the skills she needed.

Thereafter, I au-paired for a Spanish family with a very adorable 7-month-old baby girl. My time spent with the baby included changing her diaper, dressing, putting her down to sleep, playing with her, and taking her for walks. I also helped prepare the baby bottle and assisted with feeding and bathing. With the 7-month-old, I tried different activities to keep her entertained and try to help her with gross motor skills and sensory integration. We also tried to help her become more active so we tried baby yoga.

Working with children is always a good experience for me as I get to practice a bit of my “professional” expertise and training
