Letter to the family

Dear host family,
This is Karen, from Alexandria, a beautiful city by the Mediterranean in north Egypt. I am studying double major Neurosciences/Biology and minor psychology in Wesleyan College in the United States of America. But currently I am taking a gap year to volunteer ,travel, see new cultures and try different experiences.

Previously, working as a volunteer especially with kids taught me to explain things better, patience, and gave me a simpler perspective on life. That is my greatest motivation to be an aupair.

My second motivation is that I am extremely keen on the duties assigned during the aupair. I have been working and volunteering with kids since 2016. I started working with kids in kindergarten in Egypt, teaching them basic English and origami (paper folding) for three months. In April 2021, I started volunteering with Erasmus+ in Bulgaria, where I used to prepare workshops for school students about different scientific topics. Recently,I have been a part of “EuroWeek” camp in Poland for two months, where I have been teaching students ranging from 4th to 8th grades communication and developing English skills, as well as taking care about their activities out of the camp in the dorm (as I used to live with the students, that allowed me to care more about them)

My third motivation is that working as an aupair will help me implement my own skills in my future career field as I wish to work as a science teacher in primary school, so this experience will be the best practical training to become a qualified student for my future job.

My final motivation is that I love to live abroad, meet new cultures and learn new languages. I started to learn Bulgarian and Polish during my abroad experience, and I would like to give a try to new languages as well, and living with locals would be the best option for practicing this language!, I also would love so much to share my Arabic language and culture if you are interested!

I am a hard working civil worker who has been consistently praised as efficient by my mentors. Throughout my years of volunteering projects, I’ve developed skills set directly relevant to working with kids and teaching them, whether English or any life skill.

Experience

I worked with kids during volunteering project in Bulgaria with Erasmus+ for five months. We also worked with kids in three different schools and organized some workshops for them: seed bombs, food sovereignty, sustainability, food disorders, climate change, and streotypes in society and English language classes. We also organized some field trips with the kids in the mountains of Bulgaria for searching for valuable minerals and conducting researches and experiments on this minerals.

I was an English and hand crafts (origami specifically) teacher at a school nursery for 3 months, it was an incredible experience. I was a volunteer in ''57357'' Children Cancer hospitals in Egypt, where we used to organize a party and games for the children with cancer in the hospital once a month. I also organized a rubbish day with the kids from one of the schools we worked with in Bulgaria, where we collected the plastic bottles on one of the mountains in Sofia.I was a volunteer with the United Nations, where I was an English Teacher to female children in a town in India (teaching online). This experience taught me much educational pedagogy that helped me understand children and youth more. I was a robotics coach for kids in AAST (Arab Academy for Sciences), where I used to teach the children the mechanical part of a robot for four and half months. For a year, I was a mentor in the Junior Academy Scientific challenges at the New York First, I gave my two teams 12 training sessions about scientific research, STEM Fields, the EDP process, and every technique that will help them solve the challenge. In the sessions, I always listen to them, help them develop their scientific project, ask them critical thinking questions to know more about their method of problem-solving, and discuss how to test the efficiency of their projects. Together, we have developed a successful prototype using the EDP steps that provided great efficiency. I still remember their happiness when their test plan has succeeded. I was a mentor in the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures program for young females in 5,6 th grades, where I gave a weekly session for 6 months to 5 teams about female empowerment, STEM Fields, academic readiness, critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills. I used to prepare the session content by starting with my presentation and then a workshop. Three of my mentees became mentors the next year. Then I became a mentor in the STEM U Mentoring program, where I trained young people to help them determine their passion and career path by giving them sessions about the various STEM Field careers. Earlier in 2020, I was the founder of a project called “Pro X”, which was funded by Peace First global organization. This project aims to solve the injustice that affects young girls in Eastern society; they are not allowed to have many opportunities that the males are given, especially the educational opportunities by offering professional orientations in STEM education and leadership positions, helping them to find the ′′ right ′′ life path. During the program, I reached 25 girls living in rural and poor areas, gave them 5 sessions on possible job opportunities and insights into their careers and job fields. Thus, we get the girls living in rural areas closer to their passion. Later in the same year, I became an ambassador in Peace First that funded my project. I was connected to hundreds of youth from the MENA region, seeing their peace-making projects, giving feedbacks to strengthen their ideas, providing training sessions, and making info sessions to recruit more projects from our youth and help them solve the injustices in our communities.
I was a mentor in the STEM psychology club. I prepared sessions and orientations about psychological disorders for grades 6,7,8 th to increase their awareness about their health. I was a member of the AVAD volunteering organization, where I used to make awareness campaigns for teenagers against drugs two times a week in different cities in Egypt. I used to explain to them drug effects on the brain. I was a trainer at Clouds volunteering project, where I prepared sessions and workshops about soft skills for 126 kids like emotional intelligence, presentation skills, leadership, and negotiating skills. I was the head and the founder of the recycling team in my high school. We used to go to kindergarten and teach the kids how to create art crafts from plastic bottles, thus enhancing their creativity. I used to work on web developing programming language that helped me to create a web-based program, where I have designed (and a colleague sometimes helped me in java programming) the “STEM For Kids” website that acts as a platform for kids to read and watch simplified videos about different scientific topics; I am still in the beginning of the process, but my future plan is to finish the program within six months.
