Letter to the family

Hello!

I am a young professional living in Wisconsin (USA) working in a research coordinating role at a top research Hospital. I am currently working on Dementia and aging research. Prior to this role, I was a student and researcher at the University of Wisconsin - Madison studying both Sociology and Chinese.

I would love to be an Au Pair as I love teaching and engaging with young learners. I would also love to learn more about the life and culture in China from the perspective of my host family.

I would love to be accepted as your family’s Au Pair as I want a true exchange of language and culture. I would love to cook food, play games and speak about our ideas of the world together. I am curious about how families operate within the world they live in and how, why and if that differs from what I may be accustomed to. I am naturally curious about most things and thats exactly why I love working with children; their ideas are often limitless and I would love to foster that potential.

During my time as a student, I worked as a nanny for a bi-lingual family and loved my experience. In addition to playing with and teaching the child, I assisted the family with cooking and cleaning. Outside of this one-on-one nannying experience, I worked at a nature center called “The Aldo Leopold Nature Center” in Wisconsin as an Outdoor Educator for young children. This experience opened my eyes to the wonders of learning outside of the traditional classroom; instead utilizing prairies, aquatic ecosystems, and wooded areas as our main teaching areas. In addition to this outdoor teaching experience, I also volunteered to teach conversational English to elementary-aged children and adult learners through my university. Although this was almost always in a group setting, I was also able to teach English as a second language one-on-one to a young learner in Korea via Zoom.

I would love to speak to you more about these experiences with you and your family.

Experience

I have no experience as an Au Pair specifically, however, I have experience as a nanny, tutor, conversational English tutor and educator. I love working with kids of all ages and have even taught some adult learners. Although these are not Au Pair positions, these experiences have prepared me to work with children who are learning a second language.

I want to work as an Au Pair abroad in China as I was hoping to study in China the Spring and Summer of 2020. However, I am sure you are familiar with why this plan never happened. I believe this experience would actually offer more to me than only attending a language school, which is why I would love to participate in this program. I believe working with an entire family would deepen my understanding of language and day-to-day life in China.
