Letter to the family

During my childhood, my dad was a visiting professor/lecturer at a few universities around the world and so, would sometimes have interns come to work with him. They would spend time with my family and I remember them fondly. They would join in with our life and would add to it in a positive way. I very much enjoyed hearing their stories, they’d teach me things in their language and it was fun for me as a child getting to introduce them to my favourite places.

I know that’s not quite an au pair, but it did get me thinking about how I could do something similar.

A bit about me, in short I’m a 25 year old classical violinist who likes to rock climb.

For the past 7 years I have worked as a teacher for both children and adults. I have really enjoyed being there for my students as they learn.
The reason I have decided to become an au pair is simply that I’ve wanted to live in Europe for a long time now, and to start that by helping a family seems like a lovely way to do it.

You would find me keen to help out, punctual and enthusiastic (especially when it comes to planning nice activities). I recently took a sabbatical during which I spent three months in Paris. I am confident finding my way around the city and further afield.

Experience

I have yet to experience being an au pair, but I have lived my entire adult life as a teacher.

I predominantly work as a violin teacher now, but whilst studying I decided to qualify as climbing instructor too. It turned out to be something I really loved and so I never stopped!
I have undergone extensive training both personally and in teacher training. Most of these tactics and skills have shown themselves to be transferable and have been useful for me when preparing and running sessions.

Examples of my teacher training include:
- Technical approach studies
- Special Educational Needs (SEN) and inclusivity training
- Preparing students for competitions/exams/auditions

In terms of caring for someone, I have an active role helping out with my grandmother.
2 or 3 days a week I help around the house with cooking and cleaning, but also by finding things she’ll enjoy such as games and gardening. She’s very sweet and funny but is living with dementia so needs some extra tlc.
