Letter to the family

Dear Potential Families,

Hi! My name is Maile, and I am currently a second-semester senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have lived in North Carolina my whole life but had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Florence for a semester, which deepened my love for travel and cultural immersion. As an only child, I am part of a very tight-knit family, and one of our biggest passions has always been exploring new places and experiencing different cultures. Every year, we would take a trip together, and I have been fortunate enough to visit many European countries—an experience that was further enriched by my time abroad.

I grew up as a very active and creative child, which has carried into my adult life. Throughout middle and high school, I participated in a variety of sports, including soccer, track, basketball, and volleyball. My love for exercise continues today, and I enjoy running races in my free time—last year, I even completed a half marathon! Beyond athletics, I have always had a passion for the arts. I participated in art classes and theatre productions throughout my childhood, and to this day, I love expressing my creativity through fashion and costuming. Sketching designs and sewing my own clothes is one of my favorite pastimes. For the past three years, I have also served as the creative director of my school’s fashion magazine, which has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. Additionally, I have spent the past two summers working in New York City, gaining valuable experience through fashion PR internships. At UNC, I am pursuing a B.A. from the Hussman School of Media and Journalism in Advertising and Public Relations, with a minor in Art History. I love visiting museums and studying how art has shaped global history, which further fuels my passion for cultural exchange.

My love for travel and cultural immersion is one of the main reasons I want to become an Au Pair and Live-in Tutor. However, beyond that, I also think fondly of the role my past babysitters played in my life. They were an essential part of my childhood, keeping me entertained and engaged while my parents worked full-time. I deeply appreciate the impact they had on me and would love the opportunity to provide the same experience for another family.

I have been babysitting since my freshman year of high school, and it has always been something I genuinely enjoy and feel fulfilled by. Over the years, I have taken care of children of all ages, from newborns to high schoolers, giving me experience with multiple developmental stages. Additionally, I have worked with families who have different parenting styles, and I always strive to respect and adapt to each household’s unique approach to childcare. My priority is to ensure that children not only remain safe under my care but also have fun, feel supported, and continue to learn and grow.

I would love the opportunity to become part of your family and create meaningful experiences with your children. Thank you for your time and consideration—I look forward to the possibility of connecting with you!

Best,
Maile

Experience

Beyond my experience in childcare, I am drawn to becoming an Au Pair and Live-in Tutor abroad because it aligns perfectly with my personal and professional aspirations. I have always dreamed of solo traveling, immersing myself in new environments, and making meaningful connections with people my age who are also experiencing life abroad. Living in a new country would not only provide me with the opportunity to explore different cultures but also allow me to develop basic conversational language skills, which is something I greatly look forward to. Additionally, given the current turmoil in the U.S., I find myself seeking a fresh perspective and a more stable, supportive environment. Being in a familial structure as an Au Pair would provide me with a sense of belonging and security while still allowing me the independence to explore and grow. I am eager to create long-lasting relationships, both with the family I work for and with new friends I meet along the way. Taking this step feels like a natural and exciting way to expand my horizons, challenge myself, and embrace an enriching cultural exchange.
