Letter to the family

Hi to any future host families! My name is Alinah, and I’m a 17-year-old girl (turning 18 in august) currently taking my A-level exams, with plans to take a gap year before continuing my studies. After my gap year, I hope to go to Canada to study political science or journalism, as I’m passionate about understanding the world and sharing stories.

I come from a diverse background, and I’ve always been encouraged to be independent, responsible, and confident. I’ve spent a lot of time caring for my younger sibling, which has helped me develop patience and a caring nature. My family has played a big role in shaping who I am today, and I carry those values of hard work and self-sufficiency with me.

In my free time, I enjoy staying active and playing sports, as well as engaging in creative hobbies like reading, cooking, and drawing. I love trying new activities and learning new things, especially when it comes to different cultures and languages. I’m really excited about the opportunity to live in a new country and experience daily life in a different way.

I’m looking forward to connecting with your family, supporting you with childcare and household tasks, and learning from one another during my time as an au pair. I believe this experience will be a valuable and memorable part of my journey, and I can’t wait to make meaningful connections with you all!

Experience

My expectations for my time as an au pair are to truly become part of the family I’ll be living with. I’m excited to build a genuine connection with both the parents and children, and to be a supportive, reliable presence in their daily lives. I look forward to helping with childcare and household tasks, while also sharing my culture and language—especially through natural, everyday conversation in English. At the same time, I hope to learn more about my future host families culture and language by experiencing daily life first hand. I want to grow personally through this journey, while being caring, respectful, and helpful to the family I’m with. More than anything, I hope this experience feels like a cultural exchange filled with kindness, learning, and lots of sweet little moments. I want to be an au pair during my gap year because I can’t think of a more meaningful way to spend this time. Instead of just traveling or studying, I want to do something that allows me to grow as a person while also giving back. Being an au pair gives me the opportunity to experience a new culture from the inside, not just as a visitor, but as part of a family.
