Letter to the family

Dear host family,

I am ecstatic to getting to know you. Hence, I feel the need to introduce myself and talk about my experiences so you can get to know me and what I can bring to the table. My name is Carolina , I go by Caro; I am a 27 year old, born in Barranquilla, Colombia, however I’ve lived in many different places throughout my life which has enriched my cultural horizons. This has allowed me to be able to adapt to different situations fairly quickly. The longest place I’ve lived in has been the Dominican Republic, I have been back and forth during college years but it’s the country I like to call home. I currently live with my parents, Claudia and Santiago, while my younger sister with whom I used to share room with lives in Michigan.

I describe myself as a reliable, caring and patient person, who always strives to go above and beyond. In my spare time I enjoy working out, reading, baking, listening to music, watching series, documentaries or movies. I am particularly passionate about working out, reading and baking. Since it's vital for the human body to function properly, I try to exercise daily. I enjoy baking because I find pastries bring families together, we have a small tradition that I acquired from a Swedish friend called fika; every day after lunch we drink some coffee or hot chocolate while eating a small pastry and just spend some time as a family before going back to work. The other activity that I have created a habit of is reading before bedtime.

I am a licensed psychologist, graduated from Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia, in 2019 and got my working permit during that same year. I validated my degree in Dominican Republic at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) this year, however I’m still in the process of obtaining the legal document that allows me to work as a licensed psychology in the country.
I have always enjoyed working with children, I come from a large family on my mom’s side, 10 grandkids in total. With me being the second eldest I was always tasked with the responsibility of taking care of my younger cousins. During college I volunteered at a summer camp for children, and also at a diploma course where I earned a certification in psycho-affective development and emotional education by my university. Both of these experiences encouraged me to continue working with children therefore I did my internship at a psychology center providing therapy to them and since before I graduated, I started working at a preschool as a lead teacher, where I ended up teaching to different grades and children with different needs. Later that school year during summer vacation, I also lead a class in summer camp. I currently work at a psychology center providing academic monitoring and reinforcement to children of different ages.

The reason why I would love to work as an au pair is that it’s a whole continuous year taking care of a child who I can contribute to and see grow applying the techniques I have learned. I believe this will be a challenge for me and I’m extremely excited to take it. I hope we can develop a good relationship, work and live together, learn from each other and make this year a memorable one.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter,
Caro
