Letter to the family

Hello! My name is Sofia and I am from Silver Spring, Maryland (right outside of the capital of the United States, Washington D.C.). I have years of experience working in childcare––through babysitting, nannying, and various camp counselor positions––and I'm looking forward to au pairing for 3 months on my gap year (from September-December 2022). As a certified bilingual fluent Spanish speaker, I am excited to spend next year in a Spanish speaking country. I am planning on attending DePaul University in Chicago in the fall of 2023 as a film and journalism student.

Through my years of working with a wide range of children and ages, I have tapped into so many unique personalities and keen interests. Children's curiosity and intelligence is incredibly special, and that is one of the many reasons I have chosen to pursue so many positions in childcare. As a budding film student, I love to immerse myself in the imaginations of the children I work with--and I hope to continue this philosophy into my work as an au pair. In addition to my passion for childcare, I am very interested in expanding my language skills by living abroad. While I am already fluent in Spanish, I would like to live in a natively Spanish speaking country to experience full immersion. An au pair or live-in tutor position is everything I could dream of, and my years of experience in childcare and language learning qualify me for the role.

I am a highly motivated person and quick learner, and I will be sure to adapt quickly to the norms and traditions of your family. Because I have worked with such a variety of children over the years, I can very quickly bond with them--after just a little while, I hope your kids feel very comfortable with me. I am happy to do housework and assist with household tasks outside of childcare. Because you would be offering me space in your home, I will do whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable and confident in my ability to protect and nurture your child. In turn, I will be sure to bring creativity and expression to your household. I have lots of artistic inclinations and love to create: I would love to have the opportunity to engage your child in these activities too!

While I am very excited to dedicate lots of time and energy into your family and home, I am equally excited to explore the country and meet other people my age. I am looking forward to working with you to find a schedule and structure that allows time for both of these things!

Let me know if you have any questions! I hope to meet you soon.

Experience

For 6 years, I have been a regular babysitter for many families in my neighborhood. I have done various stints of nannying, in addition to the babysitting, where I have been responsible for the children for longer stretches of time. In the summer of 2020, I created a summer camp for a pod of 7 children ages 1-10, and came up with daily activities in STEM, arts, and nature to entertain and enrich their pandemic-affected summer. I have also been a camp counselor for a Spanish immersion summer camp called Arco Iris Somos and a theater camp called Onstage Spotlight. Across these experiences in childcare, I feel that I have a strong foothold on how to engage and excite children, and I can't wait to continue to learn more as an au pair!
