Letter to the family

Dear Host Family,

My name is Kate. I’m so excited about the opportunity to join your family as an au pair. While I haven’t worked as a full-time nanny before, I bring a lot of heart, hands-on experience, and a strong sense of responsibility when caring for children.

During high school, I helped organize and run field hockey summer camps and weekly training sessions for middle schoolers, working with groups of 6 to 20 children. I loved creating fun and active environments for the kids, guiding them in sports and teamwork, and being a positive role model they could admire. I’ve also babysat my younger cousins, family friends' children, and other kids throughout my life. As an older sister, I spent a lot of time looking out for my younger brother, whether that meant settling disputes, helping him with schoolwork, or being his go-to "play-buddy".

Because both of my parents worked full-time, my brother and I were raised by nannies until we were teenagers. That experience gave me a deep appreciation for the important role a nanny or au pair plays in a child’s life — not just as a caregiver but as someone who can offer stability, support, and joy to a kid's environment. I feel so grateful for the loving and playful nannies who helped raise me, and I would be honored to bring that same energy and care into another family’s home.

I am hardworking, creative, responsible, and always willing to learn. I would love the chance to get to know your family, support your children as they grow, and learn more about your culture through daily life together. I believe the au pair experience is a beautiful exchange, and I’m truly excited to be part of it.

Thank you so much for considering my application.

Warm regards,
Kate

Experience

Although I haven’t worked as an au pair before, I bring a lot of valuable experience that has prepared me to take on this role with care and enthusiasm. I’ve spent the last four years living abroad in Lugano, Switzerland, studying at Franklin University Switzerland. I’ve gotten the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and immerse myself in new cultures, languages, and ways of life while balancing my academics and social life at university. Living away from home has taught me how to adapt quickly, embrace different lifestyles, and build meaningful connections with people from all over the world.

What draws me to becoming an au pair abroad is the chance to continue living in a new culture while being part of a family and contributing in a meaningful way. I strongly value slow travel, where I can understand local life and truly feel at home in a new environment. That’s one of the biggest reasons I’m drawn to the au pair experience. I love the idea of building strong bonds with children, sharing daily routines, and exchanging languages and traditions. I'm excited about the opportunity to support a family, be a positive and caring presence for their children, and learn from a new place.

Becoming an au pair abroad would allow me to combine two things I care deeply about: meaningful cultural exchange and being a supportive presence in children’s lives. I’m excited to help out, learn from your family, and build lasting connections — all while experiencing the beauty of everyday life in a new part of the world.
