Letter to the family
Dear future host family,
My name is Libbi and I am a 23 year old Canadian girl from Ontario. I have a true passion for travelling and helping children which has led me to apply to become an Au Pair in Barbados.
I grew up with an older sister and younger brother in a small country town where I attended French immersion elementary school and high school. We spent nearly every weekend on my grandparent’s farm with our cousins and were always outside riding bikes, hiking the trails, and spending time with family. I also grew up playing hockey and basically any other sport that my school offered. Once I finished school, I knew I wanted to travel. One of my closest friends from college is Bajan and she invited me to go stay with her family. After that trip I fell in love with the country and have since visited 5 additional times. For this reason, I am confident that becoming an Au Pair in Barbados will be a good fit for me. In the future, I also hope to return to school to become an early childhood educator and have a career working with children.
Recently I have spent time volunteering with my sister, who works as a French teacher in our community. The more experience I gain in the classroom, the more knowledge I acquire about the field. I have learned that working with children and being a role model for them is truly a passion of mine. I’ve also spent time being a live-in nanny for a family friend. While away on travels, I would nanny for their two boys (one 6 years old and the other 8 years old) at their family home. Through this experience I have gained an understanding of the importance of daily schedules – this includes sleeping and eating schedules, school/sports drop offs, monitoring screen time, and working on chores. I also have developed a special bond with the boys as I’ve been babysitting them since they were 2 and 4. In addition to babysitting, I also worked as a children’s gymnastics coach at my first job when I was 15. I would coach all age groups and all skill levels from kid tots (ages 2-3) all the way up to competitive girls/boys ages 12-15. Safety, fun and skill growth were all introduced through that job experience. I believe in a healthy and supportive environment where the children feel free to accomplish tasks or play independently and explore their own interests. Ensuring that kids feel safe, supported, and encouraged is of the utmost importance. I also enjoy the fun that comes with supporting educational activities such as crafts, outdoor games, or simply helping with schoolwork. I understand the need for routine with the balance of fun and learning.
Overall, I’d like to further my experience working with children by becoming a team player for your family. I am a healthy, clean, patient, kind, and knowledgeable candidate that’s particularly excited for the Au Pair experience. I also look forward to the opportunity to learn more about local culture, explore more areas of Barbados, take part in your family’s traditions, complete helpful tasks, and become a helping hand while hopefully sharing some Canadian culture and experiences of my own!
I understand the responsibilities and respect that come with becoming an Au Pair and knowing that I’d be welcomed into your home and lifestyle is not something that I take lightly. I am committed to becoming a supportive member of the household and maintaining a positive experience for myself as well as your family. I am ready to learn from you and to help support your household through daily tasks such as cleaning, meal preparation, dietary plans, and any other activities that I can be of help with.
I am more than happy to answer any questions that you may have about me and my experiences. I would love the opportunity to learn more about your family as well. I truly believe this will be a positive experience for both your family and myself!
I am looking forward to connecting with you and hopefully meeting your family soon. Thank you for considering my application.
Warm regards,
Libbi
