Letter to the family

Hello! My name is Kim, and I’m a 21-year-old university student from California, currently finishing my final year of studies. I studied French for four years in high school and can still speak a little, though I’m eager to practice and become more fluent.

For two years, I have worked as a Residential Advisor for students who dorm at my university, who are about 17-19 years old. I am about to graduate and have recently visited Paris and fell in love with the city and French culture. At my current job, I also live where I work. I am here for the students to handle conflict, provide emotional support, and build community. I am used to working with young adults and children. On a daily basis, I manage schedules, emergencies, and resolve conflicts. I have learned a lot about patience, adaptability and attentiveness (qualities that I believe are essential in caring for children).

I love to connect with others and am very excited to become part of a French family. I love spending time with children and watching them learn and grow. On my free time, I like to be creative and either do arts and crafts or play my guitar. I hope to travel France more and improve on not only my speaking but my knowledge on the culture as well.

Experience

While I have not formally worked as an au pair yet, I have extensive experience supervising and caring for young people in both professional and residential settings. As a current Resident Advisor at my university, I support and guide over 70 first-year students through their transition to college life. I handle everything from conflict resolution and emotional support to organizing engaging programs and creating a safe, inclusive environment. These skills translate seamlessly into the responsibilities of an au pair.

I also have experience leading weekend retreats for middle school students aged 12 to 14, where I was responsible for their supervision, safety, and emotional well-being throughout the multi-day event. These retreats gave me hands-on experience balancing structure and fun while building trust with younger kids.

On a more personal note, I frequently babysit my baby cousins, who range from ages 2 to 5. From mealtime and playtime to nap schedules and diaper changes, I’ve learned how to be both patient and attentive to the unique needs of toddlers and young children. These experiences have strengthened my ability to multitask, nurture, and keep children engaged with creative and age-appropriate activities.

I’ve always been drawn to France. When I visited recently, I fell in love with not only the beauty of Paris (especially through the eyes of a local friend who showed me around) but also the warmth of French culture, the language, the food, and the family-centered lifestyle. Becoming an au pair abroad is the perfect way for me to immerse myself in that culture, improve my French, and build a meaningful relationship with a host family while continuing to do what I love: helping others and creating a positive environment for growth.
