Letter to the family
Dear Host Families,
My name is Pia, and I am a 20-year-old from Massachusetts. I am excited about the possibility of becoming an Aur with your family, as I believe this opportunity would not only allow me to take a break from my studies but also help me grow both personally and professionally.
A bit about me: I am a first-generation American, with parents who immigrated from India. I have a younger sister and a dog, as well as a very large extended family. My background has instilled in me a strong sense of family, resilience, and a deep appreciation for different cultures. Some of my hobbies include reading, playing volleyball, board games, and outdoor adventures like hiking.
Currently, I am pursuing a degree in psychology, which I am passionate about. However, the current state of U.S. politics and education has made me realize that I would benefit from a break and the chance to immerse myself in an international experience. I see becoming an Aur as a way to spend time productively abroad, gain new perspectives, and return to my studies with renewed enthusiasm and motivation.
While I do not have formal experience as a nanny, I have a great deal of experience caring for younger children. As the oldest daughter in my family, I have spent a lot of time looking after my younger sister and many cousins. Additionally, I worked as a music tutor for a young girl for a year, and in high school, I tutored students in Spanish. I find that teaching comes naturally to me, and I enjoy helping others learn and grow. My background in psychology also gives me an understanding of child development and human behavior, which will allow me to connect with children in a meaningful way.
In addition to my child care and tutoring experience, I have worked in environments that required responsibility, organization, and attention to detail. I have volunteered at a veterinary shelter and worked at a stable, caring for horses, cows, and other animals. These experiences taught me how to assess needs, manage tasks efficiently, and respond with empathy and care—skills I can apply when caring for your children.
As the oldest sibling, I am very comfortable with household chores such as cooking, laundry, cleaning, and organizing. I love to cook and bake, and I’m always happy to contribute to family meals. Some of my specialties include oven-roasted chicken, various salads and Indian vegetable dishes, and homemade chocolate cake. I also know how to bake bread and take pride in my cooking skills.
Academically, I excel in subjects like English, Spanish, and the sciences (including Biology, Anatomy, and Psychology) and feel confident in my ability to teach them. I am a passionate reader and writer, and I would love to help your children develop their reading skills and engage in creative activities. I also have over ten years of experience playing the cello and some experience with piano. I am comfortable teaching music lessons, including sight-reading and cello, which could be a fun and enriching activity for your children.
Lastly, I am not afraid to get my hands dirty. I have experience working in gardening and caring for a variety of animals, so I’m comfortable with outdoor chores and any other tasks that might come my way. I consider myself to be low-maintenance, adaptable, and open to new experiences. Growing up in both American and Indian cultures has given me an open mind and an easy-going attitude, and I am excited about the opportunity to experience a new culture while contributing to your family.
I believe I would be a valuable addition to your family, offering a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a genuine love for children. I am committed to creating a safe, fun, and enriching environment for your children, and I would love to help them learn and grow during my time with you.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of getting to know you and your family better.
Sincerely,
Pia :)
