Letter to the family

My name is Lydia, and I’m currently a Biology and English double major with a minor in Psychology at Wake Forest University. I’ve always loved working with children, there’s something truly unique about their way of seeing the world. I spent a summer as a camp counselor, where I worked closely with children of all ages. Whether I was leading cabin activities, or organizing group activities such as canoeing or archery, I felt completely in my element. That experience made it clear to me how meaningful it is to support young people in their growth. I also worked as a patient triage assistant at an Integrative practice, where I regularly interacted with children in a healthcare setting. I learned how to speak calmly and gently with young patients to help them feel at ease and build a strong rapport, while working collaboratively with their families. This role strengthened my ability to handle responsibility, remain attentive to individual needs, and communicate with kindness, particularly when children are feeling vulnerable. I want to become an au pair not only because I enjoy childcare, but also because I’m excited by the chance to become part of a family in another culture. To me, being an au pair isn’t merely a job, it’s a mutual exchange of trust, care, and learning. I would love to share my energy and dependability with your family, while also gaining a deeper appreciation of your daily life and traditions.

Experience

While I have not formally worked as an au pair or live-in nanny before, I have several years of hands-on experience working with children in both recreational and clinical settings. I served as a camp counselor, where I lived and worked closely with children ages 7 to 14 in an overnight setting. I was responsible for their daily routines, emotional wellbeing and creating a fun, structured environment via games, creative activities and outdoor adventures. I became a trusted role model to many of them and loved watching their confidence and independence grow. In addition to this, I worked as a patient triage assistant, where I regularly supported families and worked with children in a healthcare setting. This gave me valuable experience communicating with kids during moments of stress, building trust quickly, and supporting their needs with compassion and attentiveness. I would love to become an au pair abroad because I see it as the perfect blend of what I care about most: working with children and engaging deeply with a new culture. I’m curious, open-minded, and excited by the idea of becoming part of a family's everyday life, learning from them, and offering my care and support in return. I believe these kinds of experiences foster empathy, perspective, and genuine connection, things I value deeply and hope to carry into my future career in medicine.
