Letter to the family

My name is Jasmin and I am an American military child who was been fortunate to live all over the United States, Germany, and France. My family is largely split up between the Southern United States and the Caribbean, but I do have plenty of family between Germany and the UK. I was mostly raised in Florida and Texas (yes, we're the ones who speak a bit funny) and do consider myself a Southern Belle :)

I have my Bachelors in Psychology and Organizational Leadership, and last year I got my Master's in Arts & Cultural Management to work in cultural industries (I love working directly with musicians and music institutions). I have also had training as a luthier and am quite proud of the guitars I have made.

Growing up I was a musician and played both Blues music and with different symphonies. One of which was invited to perform in France and gave me my first experience of independent travel and interacting with different cultures outside of the military environment. I loved it and eventually lived in France and Germany by myself.

I become a teacher of sorts when I go back home to Florida and discovered that I really do enjoy engaging with children in matters related to my field. So much so, to where my arts association is currently working with others to discover how we can create luthier work shops for kids between the Southern United States and Central Africa and teach them about music from both regions.

Experience

I believe that children are the future and want to do my part in ensuring that they continue to approach the world with the same curiosity and compassion that I believe got me to where I am today. For several years I have worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters and different schools catering to migrant children in the US, amongst other programs. I did everything from preparing lessons plans (largely around music and the English language), playing with the children and being a less scary introduction to my country, helping bridge the gap between small children and their older grandparents with cognitive or mobility issues, and other fulfilling work. I also have several younger cousins, a 17 year old sister, and a 3 year old baby brother who I spend as much time as possible with when I go home. Not only do I like the fun and excitement that comes with working with kids and seeing how their minds work, but I do like engaging with them over how they view certain elements of their society and what they think about the world around them.

As someone who grew up in a military family, being exposed to different cultures was one of the most central components to who I developed into today. Whether this was by way of exchanging music and food or having difficult conversations about the way our background played into our experiences, I am grateful for having the opportunity to expand my global understanding from a young age. To me, it is important that I am able to provide that idea for the next generation as it becomes more apparent we are living in an increasingly shrinking world.

Being an Au Pair abroad means moving with the world around us and connecting with some of our most critical members of society: our children. I remember my first interactions with certain cultures and communities as a child and can speak firsthand as to how they changed my life. I hope to be that "first" for other children. Not only will it push me to grow personally and professionally, but it will also be an opportunity for me to share myself with others. While this may have a seemingly small impact on other communities initially, I think I am an example of how much this ripple effect can influence who people become. I only hope that I can serve other communities and families in the same way they have helped me.
