Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hi from the French Alps! :D

Here are just a few things to know about living here with us in the Alps:

- You must have a valid driving license, have driving experience and be comfortable driving.

(We can of course help you the first couple of weeks adapt to French roads and manual cars, be but you need to be a proficient driver in the first place). This is to ensure that you can access everything. We will lend you a car, but you must know how to drive so you can drive our children safely.

- There is a lot of cooking - so it's best if you don't mind --- or actually enjoy cooking! :)

We are a happy Anglo-French family of five living in the French Alps.

We have 3 lovely children: a 14 year old girl called Maelys and two boys. Raphael who is 12 and Gregory 7.
The children are bilingual (English - French). It's a real mix of cultures and languages in our home!

We are looking for our 5th warm-hearted and reliable (preferably English speaking au pair - but other languages like French, German & Spanish are fine too! Unfortunately, we don't speak other languages) for the duration of the French school year (from late August 2023 to mid-July 2024 - we can start earlier if you would prefer to but not later than the last week of August. We can end the contract in June 2024 but probably not earlier).

We also require you to have driving experience and be safe and comfortable driving. That's very important!
Our 3 cars are manual. If you only know how to drive a manual, we don't mind teaching how to switch from one to the other and we will practice together.

I am a university lecturer. You will therefore get university holidays (see below for details) and lots of 3-day week-ends so you can explore France and Europe.

The village we live in, Barraux, is a typical Alpine village. It's got a little food shop, 3 restaurants, 2 schools and sports facilities. The atmosphere in the village is lovely, very active. You can get a glimpse of the village as well as our Alpine valley and the dotted villages and towns and the mountains (including Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe).

Our village, Barraux, is 7 min away (by car - 10 to 15 min by bike) from a small town called Pontcharra with a train station, doctors, various shops, a cinema, etc.

NEARBY TOWNS are 30 min by train or car from the student towns of Grenoble and Chambéry. Trains and buses are very safe and reliable. Our former au pairs travelled a lot by bike or car (which we provide) + train.

Because Grenoble and Chambéry are student towns (with university campuses) there are lots of things geared towards students and young adults – including sports outings into the mountains and visiting nearby towns and touristic areas – and classes to learn French if that is what you would like to do.

We are also quite close to Lyon, Paris, Marseille and Geneva (Switzerland) by road, bus and train.

Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable, kind-hearted au-pair genuinely interested in looking after children to help take care of our 3 kids (especially Gregory (7)).

We are looking for someone who will really engage with them (play with Gregory, read him books and just generally engage with them fully) and who will enjoy (or at least don’t mind) getting lots of cuddles! This is not 'just' a job.

Your duties will include:

- At lunch time walking (15 min) or driving (5 min) Gregory to and from the village school (11:30 am) . Preparing and giving him a simple basic hot lunch at home. (I will provide the food and receipes if needed. You need to know how to cook). And then taking him back to school (1:15 pm).

- In the evenings (4:15 - 7 ish pm), depending on what has been planned for the children, either taking the children to their various activities in the village (or the next door village), or playing with Gregory, and/or going to get our plder children from school in the nearby town (30 min away by car). Preparing an evening meal and tidying after the meal.

You MUST have a valid driving license, have driving experience and be comfortable driving a MANUAL car. (We can help you the first couple of weeks adapt to French roads if need be but you need to be a proficient driver in the first place).

There are no classes on Wednesdays in France and the children have various activities. You would then either look after our 7 year old boy (playing in the garden or in the house if the weather is bad, going to the park, the swimming pool, sledging in the moutains, etc.) or go to the various activities with the older children. My parents also usually help out on Wednesday - so it's usually a three-man-team for three children on Wednesdays!

There will be a few times when we might ask for a bit of babysitting (very rarely!) or looking after a child at home if they are not feeling well enough to go to school.

We will require you do a bit of light household duties every day. You will be responsible for the children’s laundry, and making sure the children keep their bedroom and the communal areas tidy by the end of the day. More generally, we will ask you to help keep the kitchen, sitting room and entrance hall clean and tidy (as well as your bedroom of course).

When you are not on duty, you can either leave to explore and have fun or stay with us. When you stay with us, you will be expected to contribute like any adult in the family for all the fun things but also giving a hand to preparing meals, helping clear up the table tidying the kitchen and living room. We do like a good meal on weekends and if you like cooking (or trying out stuff in the kitchen!) we look forward to tasting your dishes! We have tried and really enjoyed some magnificient South African Braai, Bobotie, some Californian/Mexican wraps and some unpronouncable deserts! :D

As a university lecturer, I have part of the school holidays off, so you will be off-duty when I am on holiday: 1 week in October, 2 weeks for Christmas, 1 week in February, 1 week in April. (Work starts 1 September and ends 13th July). You need to arrive mid to late August so we can show you around and help you settle in (with a bank account, a phone, etc.). You will mostly be working Monday to Thursday and getting most Fridays off. You should therefore be able to take lots of long week-ends to travel and explore - or come with us on family outings if you prefer to do so.

Our children are bilingual, so we are really looking for someone to speak to them and play with them in English. You can always talk to us adults to learn French at evening meal times and week-ends, and of course go to French classes on Fridays and visit your new French friends!
