Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

We live in Arlington, Virginia. We are in the Washington D.C. area and D.C. is just a short metro ride away (less than 2 miles). We are in a small single family house which is in a very desirable neighborhood to live in because we can walk, metro, and bike to many locations without having to use a car. Our area has many events occurring at all times of the year. We also have the "au pair car" (used by our former au pairs) which can be used by our Granny Au Pair for the wineries or trails that are a further drive away.

We live in an area where there are many educational facilities and community classes for education (language classes) or just keeping active (pilates, pottery, etc). Nothing is far away.

We have had au pairs for over 10 years and looking for a different experience. We have had many enjoyable experiences with past au pairs, but we also found it was not always a good fit for us. It's been hard to live with a teenager for 10 years in a row, reliving the same teenage year over and over again. We are genuinely looking forward to a different experience with a granny au pair, as neither my husband's mother nor my mother have been active in our kids lives - both live far away and are not in good physical health. We think we all would benefit from a different type of family relationship with a granny au pair.

We keep in touch with many of our former au pairs, as much as they wish to do so. Many have also come back to visit. We are willing to have the same type of relationship with our granny au pair, as much as they would like to. We still send photos of the kids, give updates, and welcome them should they be able to visit.

Job Description

There are two times of the year for kids, the school year and the summer. These times have different schedules and we need different amount of help for each.

The school year: We need help from 7:15-8:30am when the kids get up and need to get to the school bus. At this time, no driving is required that we are aware. The bus stop for the twins is just 2 houses down our street (very close). Our older son will be in middle school and picked up by a different bus. We don't know where that bus stop is yet or what time he needs to be at the bus stop -- we will know more over Summer 2025. For the most part, he can go to the bus stop on his own. In the morning, the kids need help with breakfast, getting ready for school, and they need lunches made. For our older son, he can start helping to pack his own lunch, but may still need help.

After school, the kids have a few activities before or after dinner. The day/time of the activity may change. For example, now, Monday they go to a park after school and then our older son had a German tutor at 7pm. On Tuesday, the twins get some tutoring from my sister who is an elementary school teacher. This is really for the twin that needs help with math, but our other son thought his brother was playing games (having too much fun) and wanted tutoring too! So, now they both have a little time, although he doesn't really need it. On Wednesday, all the kids go to martial arts. They say they are tired on it and want to try something else in January. On Thursday, they go to a kids club at the library and pick up new library books. On Friday, they may go to a park...then it's Nintendo or Movie time to transition into the weekend.

During the Summer, we need help from 7:15-4:15pm or about that. We can adjust a little. While our area is highly desirable to live and work in, we also have a lot of traffic that make our work day longer and not predictable. We will put the kids in a camp for a couple weeks during the summer, but we don't know if all the kids will be in camp at one time.

We need help preparing dinner for the kids for 2-3 days of the week. We are used to the au pair program, where they are only able to do activities related to the kids and there is not a high cooking skill. We have purchased easy foods, such as frozen-to-oven meals (lasagna, enchiladas, pizza, chicken nuggets, etc) which are easy for our au pairs because most don't cook at home. We can continue this trend, but also welcome if our granny au pair is open to making foods. With our au pairs, my husband and I would cook for the remaining days and on weekends. We usually get take-out once a week. While we are unhealthy eaters. However, with kids, we can not eat very clean either. It's a balance between doing our best to get healthy food and convenience. The kids do eat more variety than they did even a year ago. And, they will expand their food choices more and more as they get older -- with encourage from us.

Please ask any questions if we missed something. And, we would be happy to update this section as we know more about what activities the kids will do next year.

Accommodation

We have a bedroom available that has been used by our au pairs, which would be for you. It has a Full-sized bed, 2 dressers, and desk. It does not have its own bathroom. We have a small house, so we don't have a lot of bathrooms in the house. However, we have lived with au pairs for 10 years and are very adjusted to living with a person in our house, sharing the bathroom respectfully, being comfortable with boundaries to give alone time and weekends off.

We also have the au pair car for sole use of our pair...which can then be used by you. We will have the car available for your use so long as it is not in an accident, which we would then not replace it. We provide gas for the car for anything around town. However, if you want to go further, you have to pay for the gas for that trip. Also, we do have a limit on where the car can drive because distances can be very far in the US. We pay for insurance, inspection, and repairs for the car so it is important to us to make sure the car is used appropriately--something we've had to reinforce when we had au pairs.

We have wifi. Please ask questions regarding other accommodations, as we may not know what is of interest to you.
