Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Future Family Member:

Thank you for reading our letter.

We appreciate you taking this brave and adventurous step to be an au pair!

First, let us tell you about Austin, Texas. Austin is a popular destination for people all over the world because it has so much to offer. We suggest you do an internet search with "Austin" or "78758" along with your favorite activities to see how it is a fit for you. We live inside the city in a rapidly growing part of it. We live just one mile from "The Domain" which is a popular place to hang out.

We are a pretty average middle class American family. Our home is technically a condominium, but it is freestanding so looks like a house. It is 1300 square feet on two levels. It has three bedrooms, two and half bathrooms, and a small office. There is a small backyard, but no front yard.

Your bedroom is upstairs along with the other bedrooms. We offer a bathroom just for you to share as needed with the children. We can take out or add in furniture to make you more comfortable. If you are an experienced driver who happens to have that experience with a standard transmission, then we also have a car for you to use recreationally. (Parents usually drive the kids.) We have a membership (Sam's Club) where we get a discount on gas. We will add you to our cell phone plan.

Our start date is very flexible.

The dad/husband of the family is Chris. He works from home full time in management at a software development company. He is kind, introverted, intelligent, and an amazing cook.

The mom/wife is Danielle. She loves being a full-time mom, but finds two energetic little ones a challenge at the age of 44. She likes gardening, yoga, reading and traveling. She once studied abroad in the Netherlands.

We both have traveled quite a bit and worked with people professionally from all over the world.

Aria is the youngest at 2 years old. She is a sweet and sensitive girl who will take time to warm up to you.

Sebastian is 4 years old and one of a kind. He is exceptionally bright and exceptionally challenging. He can already read, do basic math, and tell you about the countries of the world. He struggles with motor skills which makes him accident prone. He is charming, extroverted, and will warm up to you immediately. He needs someone patient, affectionate, quick-witted, and creative in his care. You can expect him to become very attached to you.

Both children need to be monitored at all times though mom will often spend one on one time with each throughout the day.

Danielle is home and nearly always physically near the children. They often even go with her to medical appointments. A match for us is comfortable working as a team with the mom there.

We are a Christian family (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). We try to honor the meaning of holidays, but also have fun. Prior to Covid, Sebastian and parents were able to travel to Prague and Amsterdam. My husband was traveling to Europe once per year for work, but that is on hold. We sometimes travel to Kansas to see Chris's family. We might go to Michigan sometime to see Danielle's family. There is also quite a bit to do for staycations in Austin!

We are not morning people. My husband gets up early for work, but the kids can sleep as late as 10am. The kids go to sleep between 9pm and 10pm - sometimes later. My husband and I usually go to sleep after 1am.

We eat quite a lot of fresh food that we cook from scratch. This is both healthier and also more work. You ar expected to help prepare and cleanup any food you eat as part of your household member responsibilities.

We do also have a part-time nanny who has been with us for two years. She is going to school to become a teacher so I expect she will have less availability over time.

We have a strong interest in the children learning Spanish. I first introduce my children to a map of the world before a map of the USA because I want them to know there is a whole world out there that we are a part of. We look forward to you bringing your culture to our home so our children can grow up with a broadened mind. Sebastian will have many questions for you!

We hope that we can help you feel comfortable and make this a positive experience. We are older parents, and the kids need your youthful energy. We thank you again for looking at our profile.

Sincerely,

The Geisert Family

Job Description

Describe the household duties related to the children your au pair will perform and how often they need to be done. Related chores include meal prep and cleanup, folding and putting away clean clothes. Daily. Changing diapers for Aria and eventually potty training. Sebastian still needs help getting cleaned up when pottying. Helping to rotate toys. Help to sort which clothes are too small and which new clothes are needed.

Describe what role your au pair might play in your children's school schedule or educational development. Sebastian is exceptionally intelligent. He sometimes takes online classes. You might need to print out the materials and get out his supplies. We would like you to have some time each day taking to them in Spanish and reading Spanish books.

Describe the types of play or free-time activities you would like your au pair to engage in (or avoid) with your children. Most needed is more physical play like parks and running. They both need to be watched closely for falling.

Describe the relationship you'd like your children to have with your au pair. Like she is a big sister.

How would you like your au pair to handle challenging behavior from the children? Sebastian needs creativitiy and new strategies often since he outsmarts most things. We try standard things like talking and explaining. We might remove a privilege. If he is running away or toward danger, you have to pick him up. He sometimes does need to be placed in his room if he is pushing his sister down. Aria is pretty easy and just needs standard supervision like not putting odd objects in her mouth. Just check with mom or text if there is ever a question. Usually if you can stay calm and patient, the kids will copy that from you.

We would expect personal calls, personal text messages, etc to be minimal during work time. You should not ever be on social media during work hours. We need someone who is interacting with the children or other work tasks during work hours. We do not allow other people to photograph our children.
