Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

********* We are currently looking for someone starting in January 2026. *****************

Dear Au Pair,

We are a multi-cultural family living in the heart of Berlin. My wife is German/Japanese, and I am American.

Our apartment is quite near Nollendorfplatz and thus offers great connections to almost anywhere in Berlin, including several language schools. Our current Au Pair walks to her school in under 5 minutes.

A good candidate for our family is someone who has lots of experience with small children and a real interest in playing with them and spending time with us as a family. Ideally they would be Japanese.

Job Description

We'd like someone to help us get our kids ready for school each morning. Their schools are a close walk from our apartment. Unless a child is sick and must stay home, you'd generally be free during the day to study German and explore the city before helping again in the afternoons.

You would pick up the kids from preschool at 16:00 at least 3 days a week, and we'd like to have dinner as a family with you around 18:30 each day.

Often on weekends, my wife has her concerts in the evenings, and thus we'd like for you to play with the kids after dinner for an hour and bring them to bed. We also have a regular babysitter come about once or twice a week, so there could be some flexibility in your schedule coordinated with her help.

We would also expect some flexibility from your side, as we often have changes in our work schedules at short notice.

Our current au pair is also happy to speak with you if you'd like to ask her anything about us.

We have a maid come once a week as well, but we'd like your help keeping the place clean. This means light work like doing the dishes or cleaning the kitchen countertops after a meal, and perhaps vacuuming a room one in a while. Our children are also learning to do their part by picking up toys and putting away clothes.

We also would love to host someone who enjoys cooking and wants to cook alongside us the and children. We try to make a big family meal at least once a week and would love to include you in that. Naturally, we'd like for you to make smaller meals for the children when you're watching them, such as sandwiches or easy pastas.

Accommodation

You would have your own bedroom in our new apartment. We all share the bathrooms. Your room has large windows and is furnished with a regular bed (160x200), a wardrobe, and a small writing table. We all share the large kitchen/living room with a balcony. There is a lot of natural light throughout.

We have great WiFi and a fast, fiber-optic connection. There is an elevator to our floor and storage for bikes in the basement and in the garden.

Our apartment building also has a small, private playground in the back, and we live near several public playgrounds. We are about a 10 minute walk from the Tiergarten and 20 minutes from the Zoo, which is a beautiful park in its own right.
