Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

We are a family living in central Canberra seeking a live-in aupair to care for our baby girl who will be 11 months at the start of the engagement in December 24 / Jan 25. She is a smiley, relaxed and happy baby who we joke is our 4x4 baby because she handles any conditions.

We live in a comfortable three bedroom home with garden. You will have your double bedroom with a queen bed, and use of the main bathroom which we don't use much as we have our own ensuite.

You will have use of the family cars as needed for managing household and caring needs and limited personal use by agreement. Canberra is well serviced by transport services and we live quite centrally.

Job Description

Care hours will total 30 per week.

We are seeking week-day care for baby 4 days a week Monday-Friday. Baby's Nanna will care for her in our home the other day a week. One of us will work from home on 3 of these days to provide you with a bit of support through the day. This will mean you are giving baby her bottles, preparing and feeding three meals (from pre-made frozen portions), giving an afternoon bath on alternating days, play time, reading and singing to her, changing nappies and putting her down for naps (currently 3 per day). The schedule will be yours to set but follow her eat/sleep/change needs. We ask that when you're with her there is no screen time (no TV for her/you and no phone time for you) she needs adults in her space who are present and engaged and that's something we are committed to providing her. On those 4 days you're welcome to be on your phone when she's napping or if we are relieving you when working from home.

We ask that you keep your room, your bathroom, and toilet cleaned (weekly) and mange your own washing and dishes. You are not our house cleaner and we do not expect you to clean our home more generally. Your main role in our family is to love our baby, care for her so we can work, and for periods on weekends when we need to run errands or get some exercise in, but this weekend time might be while we are down the coast at the beach, or another excursion, so should be fun. You will be included in our fun, not there just as a babysitter.

You will not have to pay rent, bills, petrol, or meal-based food (breakfast, lunch, dinner) but will have to buy snacks you specifically want to have for yourself, any online subscriptions - netflix etc- and any excursions you want to take in your own time. We consider having an au pair as a cultural exchange in experiencing Australia, and to embrace you as part of our family. It is not a 'job' like paid employment and we will not treat you like an employee but an ally in raising our baby girl and in turn show you respect, care and regard.
