Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

We are Hattie and Tom . We have a 5 year old girl, Henrietta; a 3 year old girl, Margot; and a 7yr old cocker spaniel, Welly.

We have had three lovely au pairs over the past 4.5yrs. The first stayed with us for 1.5yrs, and the second helped with the summer holidays for approx 3 months and our third has been with us for 2.5yrs. We loved having them to stay with us, and they all became part of the family.

We will be living in Catterick, North Yorkshire from December. The area is full of friendly families and the local shops, cafes, cinema, shopping centre, etc are close by. It is also very close to Richmond, a beautiful market town with historic buildings, including a castle. Catterick is right next to The Yorkshire Dales National Park, which is known for its stunning scenery and great natural attractions such as Malham Cove and Aysgarth Falls, perfect for anyone who enjoys the countryside.
Catterick's closest mainline railway stations are Northallerton and Darlington; both 25km away to the south-east and north-east respectively. There are regular bus services to Richmond and Darlington. We will be living in a 5/6 bedroom family house, with large family living space downstairs (kitchen, dining room, living room and loo) and 5/6 bedrooms upstairs, including a family bathroom. The house has a garden at the rear. The room set aside for our au pair will be a large (double) bedroom, with plenty of storage and a TV. We will provide bed linen and towels. The family bathroom would be shared by everyone. We have wifi and a cleaner who comes to the house 3(+)hrs a week.

Job Description

Primarily we need help with pick up and drop off at school and in the afternoons giving Henrietta and Margot tea and getting them ready for bed.
You would take them to school in our car, which you will be able to use in your own time unless we need it.

An example of a day might include:
- 7:00 helping to get Henrietta and Margot up. (Dressed, breakfast and ready for school.)
- 7:30/8:00 drop Henrietta and Margot off at school.
- 8:30-15:00 free - may include 1-2 dog walks and helping with general house work: clear any plates from breakfast; empty/fill dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer; put away any clean clothes for Henrietta and Margot etc. (We do not expect an au pair to clean, as we have a cleaner, but am looking for someone who can use their initiative to be helpful around the house and contribute to keeping everything clean/tidy and running smoothly).
- 15:30 – collect Henrietta and Margot from school and give them a light tea, help with homework if required
- 18:00 – help to bath Henrietta and Margot if Tom/Hattie not home
- 18:30 – story for Henrietta and Margot, if Tom/Hattie not home
- 19:00 – put Henrietta and Margot to bed, if Tom/Hattie not home

Times are not set, and are likely to change as we work out our new routine.

Ideally we would love someone who likes dogs. Our dog is a sweet, friendly, working cocker spaniel. Duties may include walking the dog. We are close to lots of lovely walks and open areas.
When Henrietta and/or Margot are unwell and cannot go to school, we would like you to be flexible and change your plans (where possible) so that you can look after them.
If we need you to work more than 30 hours per week, we will pay you extra.
Babysitting: We will give as much notice in advance of babysitting requirements, but the specific evenings each week will vary depending on our commitments. We would like you to babysit for one evening at the weekend per month.

We will provide pocket money.

Family Description

Henrietta is a really happy, chirpy little girl. She’s very social and loves to be the centre of attention. She likes drawing, craft, imaginative play, reading, singing and dancing. Margot, is similarly sociable and fun loving. She's really talkative and loves running around and playing with her sister.
We are an English speaking family and would expect our au pair to speak to Henrietta and Margot in English, although it doesn’t need to be perfect.
Henrietta and Margot will both be at school in January, from 8am - 3.30pm, 5 days a week. Margot will attend the nursery at the same school as Henrietta. The school is a 15-20 min drive away. Our key reason for getting an au pair is to help with the school run for both girls, as both Tom and I have long days at work.

At the weekends we often go and stay with our parents, otherwise we like gardening, going for walks, cooking, etc. We like to have our friends and their families over when we can, and our au pair is always welcome to join us.
