Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Potential Au Pair,

Thank you for considering our family as a host! We are Emily and Patrick and we are hoping to find someone who is a good match with our family and will be a positive addition for our children. We have a daughter, Cora, and a son, Merritt. They are both normal, happy children who are mostly easy-going and fun to be around. We will be living in Colchester, Vermont, a short drive from Burlington, Vermont, in a house on Lake Champlain.

Currently we are living in Berlin, Germany. We have lived here for the past 5 and a half years but we are moving back to Vermont in summer/fall 2022 and are hoping to find an au pair for around that time. We'd like to find someone who would commit to at least a year stay with us. Cora will be 4 years old and Merritt will be 2.5 years old at the time we would like you to start.

Patrick works as a cybersecurity consultant and Emily works as a writer and editor. Currently, we are both working from home but that might change.

Our children are being raised bi-lingual and we are hoping to find someone who will speak German with them during the day but we will speak English together as a family. Patrick is a German-American dual citizen and his mother is German. She will be living with us for the summer months. Emily is American and understands German but is not fluent.

Cora and Merritt were both in a bilingual Montessori KiTa in Berlin where they spent 9am-3pm every week day with other children and teachers. They are both active, social and are used to spending time away from us with other trusted caregivers.

They are used to playing outside for a majority of the day so we'd like the au pair to be comfortable with spending a good bit of time outside. Our area is full of nice walking trails and playgrounds and we have a large yard.

They also enjoy activities like painting, drawing, building, and other types of crafts. We're hoping to find someone who is interested in proactively finding age-appropriate activities for them to do on a daily basis. For example, finding toddler activities on Pintrest or Instagram and gathering the materials and setting it up for them.

You would also be responsible for making them breakfast and lunch and snacks throughout the day. We'd also like you to tidy up and clean, so cleaning up the dishes from breakfast and lunch, or picking up toys or craft items after you're done using them, for example. You might also be asked to help out with the laundry, dishes, or general cleaning occasionally. It's important to us that you are patient, kind, and gentle when caring for our children but are also comfortable setting boundaries with them.

In general, you would be responsible for caring for the children from about 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday. We would also like you to watch them or be available after they go to bed in the evening once or twice a week. You will have weekends off but are welcome to join us for whatever activities we are doing.

There is a possibility that Cora and Merritt will attend daycare in Vermont part-time, so perhaps three days a week, but we haven't finalized this yet. If they do, you would be responsible for taking them or picking them up and driving them home. It's very important that you have a driver's license and a clean driving record. We might also ask you to run errands, like picking up groceries, sometimes.

Our family enjoys the outdoors and our area is great for activities like hiking, biking, lake swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, and in the winter, cross-country and downhill skiing. We like to cook and bake and we enjoy staying in and watching movies or having relaxed weekends together. Emily enjoys long-distance running and yoga. Patrick enjoys playing golf, going for walks, and reading. Cora is currently into hide-and-seek and tag, and Merritt loves having books read to him and building towers of blocks to knock down.

We enjoy traveling. Emily's family is living in Pennsylvania and we will be visiting them a few times a year; you would be welcome to join us or to take that time off or travel yourself. We also have friends in Washington, DC and New York City and would be visiting them once or twice a year and you would be invited along on those trips as well and could explore the cities on your own or alongside us. Patrick's mother lives in Sarasota, FL for most of the year and we would also visit her at least once a year and take the kids to Disneyland. We will most likely take other trips around the U.S.

You will be staying in a brand new, small apartment above the garage (it is connected to the main house) that has its own bathroom and its own entrance. It has a small balcony that overlooks the forest and lake. Construction was just completed in 2020 and everything is new. However, when Patrick's mother stays with us during the summer, you would be asked to give up that space and move to another bedroom while she is there.

We are happy to set up calls or video calls with you to get to know each other and answer any questions you might have about our family, our home, and the Burlington area. We have had a summer au pair (through a private arrangement) in the past and have had a regular babysitter for the past two years and both would be willing to provide references. We'd love to get to know you and your family so that everyone feels comfortable with the arrangement!
