Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hello,

We are Daniel and Robin and we are looking forward to meeting you!

In June of 2021, Robin had an accident that broke her neck and caused a spinal cord injury. She has made a lot of progress in her recovery, but she still needs help with mobility, self-care, exercise, household tasks, and other activities. I (Daniel) am currently Robin's caregiver, but I also have a full time job that requires frequent travel.

We live in Iowa, USA in the countryside on my family's farm. We have a home with several bedrooms, one of which we would dedicate to the private use of our home share caregiver. There is also a bathroom that would be the caregiver's private bathroom, except for the times one of our daughters visits for a few days.

Robin and I have 6 children, but 5 of them are either at university or graduated from university. Our youngest child is 13 years old. He splits time between our home and his mother's home.

We are looking for a caregiver to join our family and assist with our daily needs, especially focusing on Robin's continued recovery and to be a companion for her when I am traveling for work.

Job Description

Robin is self-sufficient in many ways. But, she also has many limitations resulting from her spinal cord injury. These limitations impact her mobility and the use of her hands. She walks with a walker or cane. Although most of the time she can get herself in and out of bed, there are days when pain or spasticity make it difficult for her to do so and she needs some assistance. Her injuries make almost all tasks more difficult, from washing and drying her own hair to performing household tasks. Robin is disciplined about doing her physical therapy, yoga, and stretching, but all of these would be more beneficial and effective with the assistance of someone to simply help her balance or perform the exercises more completely. We live several miles from the nearest town, so the home share caregiver must be able to drive a car and be willing to take Robin to doctor appointments, shop for groceries, and perform other errands.

Mostly, we are seeking someone we can welcome as a family member who will be Robin's companion and caregiver. Robin's body was broken in her accident. But, her mind is still sharp and she is a blessing to anyone who has the fortune to spend time with her.
