Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hello out there! Our current au pair is French-Moroccan and has really enjoyed living in Copenhagen! She has been with us for 6 months and we have extended her contract a bit while she explores new opportunities and while we look for the next caring, responsible and trustworthy young woman to share an au pair experience with. So, we are once again interviewing candidates who are available to start from May 1, 2024

Copenhagen was rated the safest city in the world, and the city with the coolest neighborhood in the world! (...and world's best restaurant). The city isn't huge, you get pretty much everywhere in 20-30 mins, but it has a lot to offer if you're looking for new and fun experiences.

We are a pretty silly and goofy Danish-American family, with a strong work ethic and a flair for arts and crafts. I was a nanny and housekeeper myself in my twenties, so I know what its like, and we are really looking for someone to be like an aunt type figure -- who gets a bigger allowance and therefore does a little more of the household chores. We do not, by any means, expect you to do everything -- we are looking for an au pair, not a maid. However, we do want someone who can help us with some of the practical duties of daily life like: packing the kids' bags for the next day, picking up or dropping off the kids at daycare or school, and taking them to their extracurricular activities, cooking dinner, not everyday but a few times a week. Generally, I make the meal plan, my husband shops the groceries and then we split the days who makes dinner. You are welcome to come with suggestions or make food from your home country if you like. We would also like you to babysit a couple times a month while we are out.

All of these duties would still be shared by us as well, so do not think of all of this as being 100% all your responsibility. We are very flexible and open people. We want this to be a good experience for everyone, you included. Any good relationship is built on open communication and mutual respect :) Our current and previous au pair will also talk to you about how it is to be with us.

The kids do various after school activities during the week and theater on weekends. Our daughter goes to school about 2km from where we live (only one train stop) and our son is in full-time daycare very close to our home. We are a two parent household and both parents have full-time jobs (in Denmark full time is 37 hours a week). Both kids speak English and we have an indoor cat (who loves to play fetch!).

We live roughly 4km to the city center of Copenhagen. The closest train station is about 200m away and the bus stops about 50 meters away, both can get you there in about 10-15 minutes. It takes about the same amount of time to bike there, which many people do in Copenhagen.

The nearest language school is about 2,5km away. There is also public transportation that can get you there easily.

Job Description

We are looking for someone who can help us with some of the practical duties of daily life, like packing the kids' bags for the next day, making school lunch, picking up or dropping off the kids at daycare or school, and taking them to their extracurricular activities. Cooking dinner (not everyday but a few times a week). Occasionally being home with the kids after bedtime. Light cleaning around the house.

As I wrote before: All of these duties would still be shared by us as well, so do not think of all of this as being 100% all your responsibility. We are very flexible and open people.

We really want to experience the cultural exchange part of having an au pair and to have our au pair feel at home and independent enough to have a life away from our apartment and family. We will also help you as best we can to get you involved in your own extracurricular activities and/or language courses.
