Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

My wife and I invite you to consider a position as an au pair or live-in nanny with our family. We have three little boys, ages 2, 4, and 6. We live at the northern edge of the city of Dallas, Texas, about 20 kilometers from the center of the city, a twenty minute drive in average traffic. Dallas is a typical American city. The layout is less centralized than European cities---there are several areas around the city to go on a night out, for example, Uptown, Oak Cliff, and Addison---but the city is comfortable. In particular, Dallas-Fort Worth is among the largest metropolitan areas in the country and offers the benefits common to other American cities. It enjoys a good climate with very mild winters and hot summers. DFW airport, a hub for American Airlines and United Airlines, is an international port of entry and one of the busiest hubs in the country and gives residents easy access to other cities.

Our neighborhood is adjacent to the University of Texas at Dallas, a major university campus. Because Dallas is a large city, there are many language learning resources.

We have two cars. My wife works from home, and as a result, normally, at least one car is available for use.

Job Description

First, I'd like to say that we're particularly interested in getting the children immersive education in Russian and regular interaction with a native speaker. Though neither of us speak Russian, my wife and I agree that Russian is an important language of learning and technology, and we'd like our children to grow up fluent in Russian if possible and able to access the resources of the Russian-speaking world.

As for the more banal aspects of childcare, we've been using babysitters and temporary care for the last few years. We're able to manage with such care because with my wife working from home and with me working a hybrid schedule, we end up doing a lot for the children ourselves making childcare a light duty. Of course, we're hoping to get as much help as possible, but we're used to doing quite a lot ourselves.

My wife normally needs some specific time each workday blocked off so that she can attend virtual meetings. Two of our children attend schools during the school year. As a result, during the school year, the job involves mostly caring for our youngest son, which entails changing him about once a day, making food for him, and feeding him breakfast and lunch. So that my wife has some time to work during the day, the rest of the time, child care just involves structuring play for the youngest to keep him entertained and ensuring that he gets to spend a little time, usually an hour or so, outside. When the other two children are home on breaks from school, they require lunch and structuring of play as well.

I typically handle a lot of other duties related to the children. For example, I bathe them and cut their hair when necessary. If they get unexpectedly dirty and need urgent cleaning, we may need the live-in childcare provider to handle the problem.

I am of the mind that carefully selected television is excellent entertainment for a child---no adult can give a child the volume and quality of instruction that can come from basic educational programming like Baby Riki---so the children are permitted to watch a wide range of English and foreign language educational content on YouTube; as a result, before the age of three, they have all passively learned to recognize the letter forms of the alphabet and numbers. Of course, children make a lot of mess with toys and the like, so staying on top of the mess is a part of the job.

In spare time during the day when the children are taking care of themselves, my wife and I hope that we'll be able to rely on the live-in childcare provider to assist with very light housekeeping duties like loading and unloading the dishwasher or running a vacuum cleaner, nothing regular or too demanding. My wife and I have been driving children to and from school, but in the event that the live-in childcare provider has a driver's licence, we may want to split the duty.

As mentioned before, when I'm not at home, letting the dog out would be helpful.
