Welcome Letter to the Au Pair
Dear Future Au Pair,
Hello from the heartland of the U.S.—we’re so glad you’re here!
We’re a fun, energetic, and social family of four (soon to be five!) living in Indiana. Our kids—Isaac (5) and Emilia (2)—are full of curiosity, creativity, and affection. We’re also expecting a new baby in October. Our home includes two furry family members: Lyla, our big, friendly dog, and Ava, our mellow and independent cat.
We live in a home that really reflects what many think of as “classic American life.” It’s a 130-year-old farmhouse surrounded by fields, barns, chickens, and a big garden. In the summer, we often have a horse in the pasture. It’s peaceful, full of fresh air and room to roam—an ideal place to play outside, catch fireflies, or watch fireworks from the porch. We don’t have neighbors nearby, and we love the space, privacy, and freedom it gives us.
But don’t mistake our quiet home for a quiet lifestyle—we’re always on the go. We’re incredibly active and social, and most weeks, we find ourselves in one of the nearby towns or cities almost every day. We live in a unique spot where we get the best of both worlds: the calm of country living and easy access to vibrant communities, events, and cultural activities.
The nearest town, Frankfort, has great parks, a strong community feel, and a kids' library we love. Lafayette (30 minutes away) is a lively university town full of energy, with festivals, sports, theater, and lots of great places to explore with kids. Indianapolis (45 minutes) and even Chicago (2 hours) are regular day trips for us—we go to museums, zoos, plays, and try different foods (including Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza!). We love the variety and the freedom to explore.
A typical weekday starts around 7:30 with breakfast and by 8:15 we're ready for the day. The kids engage in hands-on learning activities like crafts, games, or cultural projects. Our kids follow a flexible rhythm that mixes structure with play. After lunch, we’re off on a new adventure—maybe a trip to the zoo, a museum with interactive theater, or a beautiful park. Evenings are for cooking, relaxing, and enjoying time as a family.
Weekends are just as full—we almost always have plans with friends or extended family. Whether we’re visiting a festival, going swimming, or just out for ice cream, we love being out in the world and meeting people. We’re outgoing, curious, and always up for something new.
We’re looking for an au pair who’s excited to jump into this kind of life with us—someone who loves kids, enjoys staying busy, and wants to be part of a family team. You’d typically care for the kids from 8:15 to 4:30 on weekdays, with occasional date night help. Your main role is to be present and engaged—talking, playing, guiding, and sharing your own culture while embracing ours.
We don’t assign a chore list, but everyone contributes in our home. If you see something that needs doing—kid laundry, tidying up, helping in the kitchen—we hope you’ll jump in like any member of the family would.
We’ve had au pairs who’ve loved the full experience of American life here—from the peaceful mornings in the countryside to the excitement of city adventures and small-town festivals. We can’t wait to share that with someone new.
If this sounds like the right kind of experience for you, we’d love to connect. We’re using the free version of this site, so please send your WhatsApp number if you’d like to chat more—we’d be so happy to hear from you!
With warm wishes,
Erica, Chase, Isaac, Emilia, Baby-on-the-Way, Lyla, and Ava
