Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Au Pair Candidates
We are very excited to welcome an Au Pair into our home and we know that the experience will enrich our baby's development. We have been married since 2016 and Siegfried was born via IVF, the process was long and difficult - he was a very longed for little baby and we are loving having him here. He has been a dream child so far, he sleeps almost 12 hours a night, is curious and very relaxed. We are also relaxed about being parents and do not get stressed when dealing with him. Before Siegfried came along, we had Deputy Dog who is a very friendly, rambunctious and a lovely natured dog - he will be 4 years old in February. He is absolutely one of the family and is quite spoilt. It would probably be best if any au pair liked (if not loved!!) dogs. We are both English and have just relocated to Scotland as Jo moved to the Scottish office of her company. We don't know Hawick or the surrounding area too well ourselves, but we know it is a pretty town with everything you need there - shops, cafes and Borders College, as well as sports facilities. We love exploring and will travel at weekends (the au pair is welcome to come with us on some of our visits to other parts of Scotland and Northern England, if they would like). The house where we live is outside the town of Hawick, but the town can be reached in 5 minutes by car. We wanted to include return rail fare once a month for a trip into Edinburgh, but the au pair will have almost exclusive use of our second car. We hope that they also want to explore the area and potentially meet up with other au pairs or friends they meet on their language course. There are plenty of areas to explore - Edinburgh and Glasgow are not too far away, as is Berwick and Carlisle. The borders are fantastic for all kinds of outdoor pursuits and there are some very pretty towns. In weekends off, we would be delighted for the au pair to explore further afield in Scotland or England using the car.

As a family we enjoy walking and exploring the area, we like going out for meals on occasion and enjoy swimming and going to the gym. As Siegfried is so small our time is taken up caring for him and making sure he is hitting his development milestones and is a happy, contented little boy. His education is important to us and we would like him to learn French, Ceris has already started speaking to him in French. We would like any au pair to speak to him predominantly in French.

We are friendly and relaxed, we are a professional couple who have moved all over the country (and world in the case of Ceris). Jo lived in London for many years and is originally from Liverpool. Ceris is from north east England and has lived all over the country. Until very recently we lived near Bath in Somerset. We have a liberal outlook and are quite left leaning in our political views. Ceris is Chief Executive of an international development and humanitarian organisation with programmes in Africa and Asia. Jo is a Category Manager for a very large food company and works closely with major supermarkets on marketing and sales strategies. Ceris lived overseas for years in various locations across Africa (Congo, Mali, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya) and in the US - she is used to working and living with people of all different nationalities and has worked with many French (and other Francophone) colleagues. Jo also works for an international company and has travelled internationally quite a lot. Ceris is a French speaker.

We do not mind if your level of English is not too advanced as Ceris is a very good French speaker and Jo can manage.

Please do not hesitate if you have any questions for us, we would be delighted to answer.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Ceris, Jo, Siegfried and Deputy Dog

Job Description

We would like the au pair to take care of Siegfried 3 days per week whilst both parents work (9-5pm with a break for lunch, Siegfried also sleeps for 1-2 hours morning and afternoon). At the moment both parents are likely to work from home due to Covid. Although Covid regardless, Ceris will predominantly work from home and will be on hand during the day should there be any issues. We would like the au pair to occupy Siegfried with toys, books, swimming and walks. The parents will more than likely prepare Siegfried's food, but the au pair may be asked to cook it and feed him. We would like the au pair to speak in French to him all the time (English with Jo and either with Ceris). We will enrol Siegfried into some baby classes and we would like the au pair to accompany him to those during the 3 days. Siegfried will attend a nursery once per week and the Au Pair may be asked to drop and pick up Siegfried. There will be rare ad hoc baby sitting.
