Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Au Pair,

We would like to introduce our family. Mom Katie is Dutch/Scottish, dad Karl is Icelandic and we are living in Germany for more than 18 years. We are both 40 years old and have three young gorgeous and happy kids, Oliver (7 years old), Hannah (5 years old) and Alex (2 years old)
It's a happy and fun household, although somewhat hectic with our three little ones. The most important thing for us is that our kids grow up to be happy and independent.

At home we speak a mix of Icelandic, Dutch, English and German. So lots of opportunities to learn many languages if you want to :) We live in a small quiet town in the middle of gorgeous vineyards with lots of outdoor activities and not far away from other bigger cities like Trier and Luxembourg.

For the last 5 years we have had au pairs joining our family. We still have great contact with them.
We are once more looking for a great and fun girl to join our family who can stay preferably at least a year.

Both of us work as pilots in Luxembourg and we need help with the kids when we work. We work at irregular times and the kids go to the kindergarten/school during the day, so we are searching for someone who is flexible, proactive, responsible, independent and honest but also who is loving, caring, enthusiastic and enjoys spending quality time with our three little ones. Because you have to look after three kiddos, we are looking for someone who is mature and responsible. Who has experience as aupair/nanny or working with babies and young kids of this age.

We as a family like to spend time together and we hope to find someone who blends in with us. Who is family orientated, but also likes to have their own things when they are not working. Which should be easy since you will have your own apartment in our house for yourself where you would live. You will also have a car for your own use when you would like to meet other people or explore the area.

We are hoping to find a great match for our family. Since we know how it is to move alone to another country we are there for you, so that your time as an au pair here will be a great experience that you will always look back at with a big smile!

Since its difficult to get to know each other only via email, we would like to invite you for a chat or video call to see each other in person and get to know each other. You can ask all your questions that you probably have, see the place where you would live and we get to know each other better and see if we are a good match. Looking forward meeting you!

Job Description

We don't have a typical daily routine since our work schedule differs day to day. There are days that we work in the morning and there are days we only start in the afternoon until late in the evening.

Alex and Hannah go every day to kindergarten until 15 o’clock, but this summer Hannah will start school. Oliver is at school every day and is home around 13 or 16 o'clock, depending on the day.

The school days in Germany are long, so after kindergarten and school its time for fun things. We always try to do activities outside if the weather is good and we have dinner between 18 and 19 o'clock before the kids go to bed around 19:30.

There are also days that we are both off and the kids are at home that day. Then we spend time together and go on nice trips and outings. Even if the weather is not so nice we always try to take the kids outside for playing.

Once a month our work schedule comes out and we will sit down together with you to discuss when you will look after the kids. For this reason we need someone with flexibility. You will know most of your schedule a month in advance and we fill in a family planner so everyone knows when and what to do.

We love an aupair who likes to take the kids for walks, adventures, to the zoo, to indoor and outdoor playgrounds and to actively do stuff with them. Not to just “babysit” them, but actively engage in playing. You have to be able and like hanging out with small children and find a creative way to create a great relationship with them. We need someone who has experience in this age group and can manage play or activities while keeping oversight of three kiddos.

On days when we work in the morning we need you to get the kids ready for kindergarten/school and take them there (it a 5 minute drive from our house) If we work evening shifts you will need to cook, feed them and bring them to bed. Normally if we work in the evenings we will be back around 11PM. The kids sleep around 1930 (and luckily are very good sleepers!) so you can hang out in our house or in your own apartment with the baby monitor after they have gone to bed.

We also work often in the weekends, so it could be that your off days will be during the week. There will be days that we are standby and on those days we will have to show up for work in one hour when they need us for a flight. That means on those days you will have to take the kids if we are called to work.

Babysitting at night once in a while, so we can go out for dinner as a couple or visiting friends.

Looking after the kids when they are sick and can not go to kindergarten.

Also tidying up after the kids have gone to bed, emptying dish washer and helping with the laundry. As you will be part of our family we expect that you help out as a family member in the normal daily routine. The cleaning of the house will be done by our cleaning lady.

Most important to us is that you will have fun spending time with the kids. That you create a bond and be a positive influence on our kids.

Trust is the most important thing that we are looking for. We are a super open family. A family who talks about everything, so we expect full honesty and open communication from our aupair.

We will give you the following:
* Good pocket money
* We will pay 70 euros towards a German language course if you are interested in one.
*Insurance will be covered by us
*You will have a car at your disposal when at work and for your own use when you are not working
*We will also provide you with a mobile phone contract with internet
*Your own private apartment to live with WIFI, big smart tv with Netflix

None of us has allergies and we are no vegetarians. We love to BBQ all year round! Since we are all eating together as one big family, keep in mind that we eat meat (and pork) on a daily basis.

We don’t smoke and don’t want people to smoke around our kids.

You need to have your driving license since you will have to bring the kids to the kindergarten. We live in the country side so you would need your car. Its for us very important to know that you have a good and sufficient experience with driving in cities and on highways, since we will trust you with our kids in the car :)

As we are an outgoing and fun family, we are looking for someone who has the same mentality. Who is not shy, likes to laugh and enjoy life with the kids.

Looking forward getting to know you!

Accommodation

We live in a small village in the countryside 5 minutes away from the border of Luxembourg. We bought a big old house 16 years ago and we renovated it by ourselves over the last years to make it our cozy home. We transformed the 200 year old house in a modern and warm place to live and to raise our kids.
We live in a quiet street where the kids can play outside and we are just steps away from vineyards, woods and fields for a lot of outdoor activities.

On the ground floor we've made an apartment which will be yours during your stay. It consists of a fully furnished living room/bedroom with your own kitchen, walk in closet and a private bathroom. You have the whole place of 55 m2 for yourself (see picture) There is a small roofed terrace attached to your kitchen where you can have your breakfast outside or enjoy a quiet morning if you want to.

We have a nice spacious back garden with a big terrace and lots of grass. There is a big play tower with swings, a slide and a clubhouse for the kids. In the summer we put up our pool for the kids to play and have fun. They love swimming! There is a comfy lounge set to chill and relax.

Your apartment is on the ground floor and we as a family live on the two upper floors with lots of space for everybody to run around and do their own thing.

We live in a small village called Palzem in the vineyards in the Mosel area. There are many small towns around with lots of wineries that you can visit. Close by you will find cute towns like Saarburg, Remich and Grevenmacher full of tourists and nice places to visit. All these can be reached within 15 minutes by car.

Our area is known for its outdoor activities. There are lots of walking, cycling and horseback riding possibilities right from our village. The Mosel river is 2km away where you can go fishing, go on scenic boat rides and rent water skis.

We live 5 minutes away from the border of the small country Luxembourg. The north of the country is gorgeous with hills and a huge lake and is an hour away. The city itself is 25 minutes away. It’s a multi culti city with many restaurants, bars, shops, cinemas, gyms and lots of culture. There are a lot of aupairs living in Luxembourg and it’s a great place to meet up with them.

Trier is the oldest city in Germany and is half an hour away by car. No matter what time of the year you go there it’s full of tourists and is always very lively. There is a lot of history and culture to discover, as well as many restaurants and shops.

The city of Saarbruecken is an hour away and is a typical student city.

On your off days you can go to the Ardennes in Belgium where you can kayak, hike and do many outdoor activities.

Although there are many places to go to, you do have to keep in mind that we live in a small quiet village in the country side. So just be aware that if you search for a lively place to live this maybe isn't the place for you. But like we said, the car is there to be used and go to other places.
