Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Au-Pair,

We are an international family, Henning (father, 35, German) and Margaux (mother, 35, French), living in the beautiful town of Kappeln, Germany. We welcomed our daughter Josephine early November 2024, and are looking for an Au-Pair ideally from August 2025. We are flexible with the starting date though.

Ideally, we would like a Danish speaking Au-Pairs, as our goal is for our child to learn Danish and go to the Danish Kindergarden/school nearby.
If you don't speak Danish, then you must be able to speak German or French as we don't want to confuse our daughter with too many languages.
Duration: 6-18 months (the longer, the better), so our daughter has time to build a real connection with you.

We speak German together at home, but are both fluent in English and I speak French with the little one so you are welcome to practice it with us as well :-)
Ideally, you will have some notions of German or the desire to learn. There is no language school directly in Kappeln, but we are happy to organise either private lessons, online lessons, or find a class in the city of Schleswig (about 50 minutes away by bus).

We live in a historical (but completely renovated) house with a garden in a very friendly neighbourhood. You will have your own bedroom (bed, desk, chair, wardrobe... just let us know if you need anything else) on the first floor. The 4 of us will share 2 bathrooms + a separate toilet, the kitchen, dining room, living room and library. If you want a private shower, you may use the guest bathroom on the ground floor as your own, but we still need access occasionally as the washing machine is there and it's the only toilet downstairs.
There is a bus stop in our street but it does not run very often. The central bus station is about 5 minutes drive or 30 minutes walk (I can drive you if I am available). You are otherwise welcome to use my e-bike or bring your own. The city center of Kappeln is about 30 minutes walk.

Let us know if you have more questions or it sounds like a good fit.

Best wishes,
Margaux

Job Description

You would work Monday-Friday, 6 hours a day (in the morning while I work until early afternoon) with a 30 minutes break in the middle for lunch. You won't be working on weekends or evenings/nights.

Your job is to play with her, cuddle her, feed her... Only her parents change her diapers as of today.

It is very important that you speak only Danish with her, so that she can pick up some words and understand a bit already by the time she starts Kindergarden. But again if you cannot speak Danish, then you shall speak German (or French) only with her to not confuse her.

We don't want to expose her to screens before she is 3 years old, so playing does not include watching movies with her.

Accommodation

We live in an old historical house that as been entirely renovated in 2024. You will have your own room (bed, desk, chair, wardrobe... just let us know if you need anything else) and share the rest of the house with the family.

Our 3 bedrooms (parents, baby and yours) are on the upper floor, as well as a family bathroom and separate toilets/shower room.
The library and Henning's office are also on the upper floor.
On the ground floor, you will find a guest bathroom (with shower and toilets), the kitchen, dining room, living room and my office.
You don't need to bring anything as we have all you may need (pillow, blankets, bed linen, towels...).
If you want a private shower, you may use the guest bathroom on the ground floor as your own, but we still need access occasionally as the washing machine is there and it's the only toilet downstairs.
The pictures of your room do not do it justice. There is a second window on the wall behind me, so you have plenty of natural light the entire day). We already removed the keyboard and added a desk + chair + armchair. There is currently 1 single bed in the room. Plenty of storage in the wardrobe plus space on the attic for your suitcases or things you don't want to use daily.

Our house has a garden. In the summer, we like to eat outside or lay on the sunbeds :-)
We live in a quiet street and your room overlooks the garden, so it's very silent at night.
