Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Welcome to our family! We are a British family living in the charming village of Kockengen, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Our home is ideally situated with a bus stop right outside, offering easy access to the nearest train station. From there, you can reach the heart of Amsterdam in just 22 minutes and Utrecht city centre in 10 minutes. We are perfectly positioned between these two vibrant cities, yet we enjoy the tranquillity of village life, surrounded by picturesque farmland, walking paths, and excellent cycle routes. Our village even boasts its own swimming pool! Everything you need, including language schools for Dutch, is easily accessible by bike or public transport. While we don’t speak Dutch ourselves, we communicate in English at home.

Job Description

Our daughter will start pre-school in June 2025, attending from 8:30-12:30, four days a week. Her pre-school is just a 5-minute walk from our house. We need someone to pick her up, make her lunch, put her down for a nap, and then engage her in fun and educational activities in the afternoons. This will be 20 hours a week (4 days x 5 hours).

You'll have one full day off during the week when she doesn't go to daycare and her mum is home. You'll also have one day off on the weekend. We need some flexibility for an additional 10 hours a week, which we'll agree on in advance, at least a week before. This could be for things like working late, church commitments, gym nights, or a date day on the weekend. We promise you will never exceed 30 hours total per week.

We currently have a cleaner who comes every two weeks. Housework is not a requirement, but tidying up after yourself and when you're responsible for Ada will be (e.g., cleaning dishes after lunch, doing your own laundry, etc.).

We ask that anyone joining us attends a first aid course and is a confident cyclist. The Netherlands is practically run by cyclists, and it's the main mode of transport here. You'll need to cycle with our daughter on the bike, but you can practice with your new bike before riding with her. A driving license is not necessary, but it's great if you have one (although we won't rely on you for this, as it's only valid for the first 185 days you're in the Netherlands).

If you have any additional skills or talents that you think would benefit our family, we'd love to hear about them.

Please note, by law we are only allowed to offer 340 EUR pocket money for an au-pair, as we live in the Netherlands. I'm not just being cheap, I promise. You will be taken care of, I promise.

Accommodation

We live in a three-floor, four-bedroom home with a small garden. Our house is part of a row of three, with beautiful canals on either side. On the top floor, we have our guest room/office, which is a converted attic also used for storage. The middle floor has three bedrooms: our main room, Ada's bedroom, and your bedroom. Your room is 8.8 sqm, with a built-in wardrobe and a large window overlooking the canal. The only room next to yours is our main room, but we have the dresser against the wall, so we would not be able to hear you if you're on the phone while we're in bed for example.

Dutch houses are rather small, so unfortunately, you won't have your own private bathroom (we don't even have an en-suite). We have a small family bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower, but no bathtub. There's also a second toilet downstairs.

On the ground floor, we have a good-sized open-plan lounge/diner/kitchen area, which is the main chill space. We also have a separate utility/laundry room and an additional bricked shed that's been converted into a very small cinema room. So, there are always two places to relax if you don't want to relax in your bedroom or with us during the evenings.

Our small garden gets beautiful sunlight in the summer. We haven't furnished the au pair's room yet, but we're thinking of a single or small double bed, with a dresser and TV, but we can agree on that in advance :)
