Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

UPDATE: WE HAVE FOUND AN AU PAIR FOR 2024. Assuming it all works out, we will come back on here when we next need an au pair, probably starting looking spring 2025 for autumn 2025. Thanks so much for all the interest.

We would like to welcome a bright, energetic and caring person into our home, to help us (Robin, mum, and Dominic, dad) look after our two wonderful boys.

We live in Hackney, East London, one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in London. Calvin (8) and Sasha (5) go to a school a five minute walk away from our home.

We would agree a weekly timetable so that you can plan any other activity or courses well in advance.

NB: You must have a Youth Mobility Scheme visa, or pre-settled status, to work as an au pair in the UK, please confirm that you hold one or are able to apply for one, please google for more info.

Job Description

We would like an au pair to help with most, but not all, breakfast/school drops offs, school pick ups, and after school to dinner time and bath time care.

We both work in the theatre/music industry so often have evening work commitments one or two nights per week. We would like our au pair to be available at home two evenings per week for babysitting.

We would also expect some light housework (by which we mean emptying dishwasher, tidying toys, putting the kids’ clothes away, for example) and cooking for the children’s supper. The boys are vegetarian.

We'd like the au pair to be available to have breakfast with the children from 7.30am on weekdays. We will be around and join for breakfast too, but also be getting ready of work. Most days the au pair would do school drop off, although one of us would like to do it at least once a week. If the au pair is doing school drop off, it's a 5 min walk and you'd be back home by 9am.

Normal morning working hours (Mon-Fri):
7.30-9.30am (20 mins to quickly clear breakfast / put bowls in dishwasher)

3 days a week, the boys have club so get picked up at 4.45pm. The other 2 days, pick up is 3.30pm.
We'd like you to make (simple is fine, but some variety would be good - and the boys are really good eaters, they like everything!) vegetarian dinner for the boys. They usually eat about 5.30pm.
Bathtime is about 6.15/6.30pm, and Sasha goes to bed about 7.15pm. Cal usually reads from when Sasha goes to bed until about 8pm, and then goes to bed.
We would take over at 7.15/7.30pm (although there are days we might be back from work earlier)

Normal afternoon working hours:
Mon, Tues, Thur: 4.45-7.30pm
Wed, Fri: 3.30-7.15pm

Babysitting: 4 hours in the evening (from normal finish time, e.g. 7.15/7.30pm) twice a week, so the kids would be in bed from 8pm latest, and you'd be welcome to go to bed too!

Weekends would normally be totally free for you to do what you liked, unless we made a prior arrangement for one of the babysitting nights (see above), or if we needed extra childcare (which we'd pay you extra for).

Pocket money: £640 per month, covering approx 34 hours per week (of which 34 hours, 26 are 'contact' / 'active', and 8 hours are babysitting after kids are in bed)

Accommodation

The house and your room:
We would make you feel extremely welcome in our four bedroom, two bathroom, light and airy home. You would have a large double bedroom on the top floor of the house, and share a bathroom with the boys. We have a large open plan kitchen & living space on the ground floor, a piano, and a nice size garden.

The area:
Hackney has great music, theatre, an independent cinema, busy bars and restaurants and huge parks.

We are a 10 min jog / cycle away from the Olympic park, Hackney Marshes and the River Lea valley for walks and a lovely place to exercise, if that’s your thing. And a similar distance from the nightlife of Hackney Wick and Dalston, if that’s you thing!

The centre of London is 45 minutes away by public transport or bike. Nearest stations are Homerton, Hackney Central and Hackney Downs.
