Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hi, I'm Nancy, a 45 year old TV sound engineer. I live in Acton, West London (travel zone 2) with my 2 children: Douglas who's nearly 14, and Rita who's 11. I work variable shifts so need help with the children around their school hours on evenings and weekends. I think this is the ideal position for someone with studies to occupy them in the daytime, who wants all the benefits that living in a welcoming family home can offer.

We have hosted au pairs since Douglas was 9 months old, and it has been a great experience. We're looking forward to finding out who will join our family next!

I’m staff at the BBC and don’t have a fixed working pattern, often working long days, evenings or weekends. This does have benefits in that I tend to work fewer days a week (ie I might work 3 12-hour shifts in a week and have 4 days off), and I enjoy the variety and flexibility of not working standard office hours.

As a family we’re quite relaxed, we like to spend time together and all have lots of activities and days out we enjoy. We’re used to sharing our home - since Doug was born we’ve had a nanny and then 7 au pairs live with us, with stays varying from 6 months to 3 and half years. We've really enjoyed welcoming all of them into our family and are still close to them although they have moved on. They are happy to talk to prospective au pairs about their experiences being part of our family.

We live in travel zone 2 in a nice area with good transport links. There is lots to do nearby (easy access to buses, tubes, shops, restaurants, parks, cinemas, English classes and much more). A lot of families in our area host au pairs, including some of our neighbours.

Job Description

I'm looking for someone to live with us mainly to help look after the children while I'm at work, but also to help occasionally with babysitting, errands or tasks around the house.

Your schedule will vary depending on my work schedule, likely requiring you to be around for when the children get home from school at least a couple of days a week, keeping them company or getting them to/from any activities they might have, preparing dinner for them, helping with homework if they need it, making sure they get to bed at a good time, and then being around until I get home from work (it is not uncommon for me to get back quite a while after the children have gone to bed, so you would be the responsible adult in the house until I am home, but you can use your time however you want and don't have to wait up for me).

I don't often have to leave for work before the kids go to school, but it does happen from time to time, so on those occasions you would also need to make sure they get up, get ready and get out in good time for school.

On weekend days if I'm working you might need to take them to their weekend activities (clubs and classes, meeting friends, birthday parties etc) and keep them company and support them at home or join them on outings. This would occasionally be necessary during school holidays as well.

I am scheduled 2 guaranteed days off a week so you would have at least 2 days completely off. You would enjoy all the benefits of living as part of a family (food, bills paid, high speed broadband, netflix etc). We can agree your pay and other benefits depending on your experience/level of English, but it would be at least £100 per week. The hours would be variable but I wouldn’t expect them to ever exceed 30 hours a week and would often be less.

Aside from looking after the children and tasks related to caring for them (cleaning up after you've fed them etc), around the house I would only expect you to do the sort of things you would do as part of a family- load/empty the dishwasher, tidy up after yourself, etc. I wouldn’t expect you to do the cleaning (we have a regular cleaner). I would also ask you to occasionally feed and care for the guinea pigs if we are away.

I think this would be an ideal position for someone who wants a welcoming family home and to have some income while they studied or pursued some interest or occupation during the kids’ school hours. We can easily accommodate most study schedules, because the children are old enough to get to and from school on their own, let themselves in and spend some time on their own, but because I am often out at work until beyond their bedtimes, I like to know they will have a grown up around to help them with dinner and make sure they go to bed etc.

Accommodation

We live in a comfortable house with a garden. You would have a good sized single room and share a bathroom with the children. We have very fast wifi, and all the other amenities you would expect to find in a family home.

We have 2 pet guinea pigs so if you have any allergies this may be a consideration.

We live on the border of Acton and Shepherd's Bush in West London. There are lots of things to do in our immediate area - parks, shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs, gyms, libraries, cinemas, Westfield Shopping centre etc. From where we live it is very easy to get around and explore the rest of London, and the rest of the country. You do not need to be able to drive as we are well connected for public transport, and the children's schools and most of their activities are either walking distance or a short bus journey away.
