Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Originally translated from Deutsch
We are a family with two daughters from Mainz. Our 10th au pair is currently living with us, Monita from Madagascar.
If you are interested in becoming our au pair from the end of August / beginning of September 2025: get in touch! :-)

Our previous au pairs have given us great support and we enjoy this international life, and like to learn a lot about other people, cultures and languages. Communication is our great strength. We talk to each other a lot and help you to quickly speak better German. And we will make sure that you feel completely at home in Germany and in our family.

Important: We are not looking for someone who just wants to do a job here, but someone who wants to be part of our family!

Job Description

Originally translated from Deutsch
Hannah goes to school during the week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Laura from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Depending on what needs to be done, the au pair's day sometimes starts earlier, sometimes later. We always discuss this with each other.

Nick and I both work and are self-employed. Nick goes to work in his law firm, which is also in Mainz. My working hours are irregular. Sometimes I have to leave for jobs early in the morning or I'm away overnight. Then again I work from home for several days in a row.

In the evening - typically German at 6 p.m. ;-) - we all eat together.

One day a week grandma comes to visit, brings food and looks after the girls.

As you can see, our working life is not as clear as in other families where the mom always goes to work at set times. Every day is different. But I am very organized, plan well in advance and make sure that you have enough free time. So far it has worked very well and I think I can say: all of our au pairs have been very satisfied. :-)

We would like someone to help us look after and raise Laura. Hannah no longer needs any support from our au pair.

It would be good if you already have experience with children of kindergarten age and you enjoy dealing with little people and you also know how to play with them, distract them when they miss their mom and how to deal with them when they are in a bad mood or don't do what you tell them.

About once a week you do babysitting in the evening.

We also need help with household chores, e.g. tidying up, cooking, doing laundry and ironing.

Our au pairs also clean the house once a week. We pay an extra €100 per month for this.

As already described above, we don't have a fixed weekly schedule because every day is different because I work independently. But you get a calendar in which I write down your tasks so that you can plan. And we discuss everything in detail.

Overall, we are simply looking for someone who has a heart to support us. Someone who likes to help and get stuck in and wants to be part of a happy German family and loves looking after children.

In return, we make sure that you have enough free time to pursue your hobbies and attend a German course two or three times a week in the evening.

It has always worked well with our previous au pairs that they were part of the family and we did a lot together, but on the other hand they could also withdraw and have some privacy.

Your day off is usually Sunday, but sometimes a day during the week - or two days if there is more to do on the other days. In your free time, we offer you the opportunity to do something with us. If you prefer, you can of course also have time for yourself. Overall, we want someone who sees themselves as a family member, not as a worker - and who enjoys sharing our life with us.

You will receive 280 euros pocket money and a grant of70 euros per month for attending a German course. For help with cleaning, you will pay another 100 euros in cash. We pay for your health insurance. We also cover the costs of extending your visa (if you are not from the EU). We are happy to invite you to activities and pay for you when we travel together. And of course, you live with us like a family member and we buy the food you like best, for example. You will have everything you need with us - and more than that. :-)

You should already speak German at A2 or B1 level. We are happy to help you improve your German further. At home, we speak standard German without a dialect. Nick and I can also speak English.

We would prefer to invite an au pair who shares our faith, i.e. is also a Christian.

Accommodation

Originally translated from Deutsch
We live in the beautiful city of Mainz (near Frankfurt, in the middle of Germany), in the Finthen district, in our own house with a garden. It is rather quiet and rural here, with beautiful fields for walking. But there are also supermarkets, an ice cream parlor and other shopping opportunities in the immediate vicinity.

Finthen is well connected to the city center of Mainz by tram and bus. The bus takes about 20 minutes to the city center. There are many shops, a cathedral and the river Rhine. Mainz is the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate.
You can also attend German courses in Mainz city center. We have had positive experiences with the courses at the adult education center (VHS) and a private language school (LanguageKult). Both are easily accessible by public transport. Bruna is taking an online course, which is of course also possible.

In our house in Mainz you have a nice, bright room of your own. You use our guest bathroom together with the children. Of course you have WiFi, for example to stay in touch with your family.
