Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Welcome to our home! We live near the centre of Mainz, on the banks of the Rhine river. Mainz is a medium sized city (for Germany), it is quite international, in a part of Germany famous for its openness and vineyards. There is good transport in the city, with buses and trains, and good inter-city connections - the largest nearby city is Frankfurt, which is 40 minutes away by train. Frankfurt is one of the major airport hubs in Germany, so international travel from here is also very easy. There are often festivals and events by the river, within 1-2km of where we live, and the city centre is easily accessible in 10 minutes by bus or escooter. The city is famous for its beautiful cathedral, and the market square next to the cathedral hosts events every year such as Christmas Markets and a weekly farmers' market. We live in a newly built house that we moved into one year ago, and we look forward to welcoming you to our home.

Job Description

The only specific skill it would be good to have is to be able to cook at least simple food. We are adventurous as a household when it comes to food, so no requirements on what kind of food to cook.

James works Mon-Fri, and is away from home between 08:30 and 18:00 except on Fridays when James usually works from home.

Volanda works from home, but is also regularly outside at the gym, physiotherapy or shopping.

Dusty goes to kindergarten Mon-Fri, the kindergarten is about 25 minutes bus ride from our home. He arrives before 09:00 and is picked up around 15:30 every day.

Main tasks to help with will be:
- Helping with Dusty's morning routine (brushing teeth, simple breakfast).
- Kindergarten pick up and drop off (about 50% of pick up and drop offs) - there is a bus that goes from near our house directly to the kindergarten. James/Volanda will also pick up and drop off, so we hope the au pair can help with about half of the trips.
- Helping with some simple cooking for Dusty
- Helping with night time wake up - Dusty is a good sleeper, but sometimes he wakes up hungry, can be given some milk and he goes back to bed
- Helping with some simple cleaning & tidying around the house (using the dishwasher, tidying toys, taking out the rubbish)

Accommodation

The au pair will have their own room, with storage (wardrobe), small desk and large window, one floor above ground level. This room is not shared or used by James & Volanda, will be the au pair's private space. The au pair's room has easy access to the kitchen and living room. There are two bathrooms in the house, one upstairs (for Mum & Dad) and one downstairs (for the au pair and Dusty). The house has fast WiFi, and a large TV in the living room. There is underfloor heating, and all the windows are double glazed so they keep out the noise, keep out the cold in winter, and keep out the heat in summer. The house is on three levels, connected by stairs. There is also an underground car park with off street storage for bicycles.

There are two supermarkets within 5 minutes walk, a gym, access to the riverside, one large park nearby and many restaurants & cafes.
