Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hello everyone!

We are a family living in a big city in northern Italy, even though we sometimes escape from the chaos and find some relief in the Alps or on the seaside! We are Lorenzo and Valentina, and we love outdoor adventures, music, and cooking!

Our daughter, Matilde, is a lovely and smiling tornado. She loves moving, exploring the world and dancing (ok so far she just starts moving when she listens to the music)! She always smiles, except when she's hungry or sleepy! :) We also have a lovely furry friend, a black-and-white cat named Taz!

We love to meet people from different countries and cultures, which is why we occasionally host guests in our living room through Couchsurfing for a few days. We enjoy sharing experiences and learning from one another!

At our home, we primarily love Italian cuisine, but we also like to experiment with dishes from around the world. We hope that with our au pair, there will be also a wonderful culinary exchange! We are omnivores but limit our meat consumption, while seasonal fruits and vegetables are always available in abundance.

We would love to find not only an au pair but also a family member to share good time together, gorgeous adventures, delicious meals, and plenty of laughter!

Looking forward to meeting you!

Job Description

The day usually starts when Matilde wakes up, which can be anytime between 6 and 7 AM, depending on the day. We usually shower in the morning, have breakfast, and get Matilde and ourselves ready for the day.

During the week, Matilde attends kindergarten (a forest school) from 8:30 AM until 6 PM, although we try to pick her up earlier when possible. We work from 9 AM to 6 PM and alternate between working from home or the office, depending on the day.

In the evening, we feed Matilde and spend some time playing with her before putting her to bed around 8–8:30 PM. Afterward, we like to relax with a movie or a board game. Occasionally, we might go out for an evening.

The au pair will be asked to assist with morning and evening routines, as well as picking Matilde up from the kindergarten and sometimes bringing her there. The kindergarten is a 15-minute walk away, and we usually go on foot regardless of the weather, unless there’s a thunderstorm or heavy rain. We fully embrace the philosophy: “There’s no bad weather, only unsuitable clothing!”

On weekends, our routine may vary depending on the season, the weather, or how much energy we have.

The au pair will also help us keep the house tidy, particularly Matilde’s clothes and toys. We love cooking and would enjoy learning how to prepare dishes from the au pair’s home country or other recipes they know from different cultures.

Accommodation

We live in a flat on the fourth floor.
It is a very calm part of the city. There is a big shopping center 10 min walking distance from the house, opened every day (Mon-Thu 8.30-20.30, Fri-Sat 8.30-21, Sun 9-20) with a lot of shops inside (pharmacy, grocery, bank, generic food, inexpensive and average expensive clothing). There are also smaller shops nearer.
We live near to a quite big park, good for a run or just a walk. There's also a wood with a very small lake 20-minute walk away.
Metro is less than 10 minutes from the house door and you can reach the city centre in 15-20min. Public transportation is generally good and relatively cheap in Milano (we will pay the au pair the public tranportation fees), while the car is discouraged because it is hard to find a parking spot and there is heavy traffic.

Lorenzo is a naturist, which means he may choose to not wear clothes at home, especially during warmer periods of the year. This is entirely his personal lifestyle choice. Au pairs will never, under any circumstances, be expected or encouraged to do the same and are always free to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable. Mutual respect is a key value in our home.

The au-pair would have a private room with a door. The room contains a desk, shelves with books (both in english and italian), a wardrobe, a double sofa-bed and a piano. Lorenzo needs to practice on the piano regularily, but of course we can agree on a schedule and adapt to the situations.
There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one has a shower.

In the house there is fast internet connection. The line does not have traffic limits, and the au-pair would have free access to it.
We do not have landline phone.
