Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Au Pair,
We are a warm and happy family looking for a loving and lively person to come and stay with us to help mum Janina and dad Tom look after our children, especially our 2 year old, a sweet and smart little girl. Our older kids, a 10 year old boy and 8 year old girl, are quite independent but we need help with the logistics of school runs and activities. If you love kids and have some experience caring for them, have a cheerful spirit, creativity and loads of energy as well as patience, then we would love to hear from you. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you into our home and family.

Job Description

We would like you to help us out with the kids and the household for 32 hours a week, spread over 4 days (likely Tue-Fri), with most work in the mornings and afternoons/evenings and some free time during school hours. This would give you 3 consecutive days off work to explore the region, pursue hobbies or find extra work.

Mornings and afternoons are busy times. It would be helpful if you are up early to get the kids ready, assist with breakfast and lunchboxes and either drop the kids off at school or stay home to watch the youngest. Then you would spend time with our little girl at home or at activities while Janina gets some work done. You would have several hours break in the middle of the day. In the afternoons, you'd assist with school pick-ups and taking the kids to activities or caring for our youngest while Janina spends time with the older kids, with flexibility depending on who needs mum most. Spending time outside in all weather is important, whether is is walking, cycling, playing games, trampolining, jumping in puddles, making bonfires or other outdoor fun.

You will definitely be driving our car (automatic) to take the kids to places, so a clean drivers license and confidence on the road is essential (we can practice driving on the left side). Another car is available for your private use most of the time (petrol would be your responsibility if you're going on trips outside the Macedon Ranges).

Occasional grocery shopping or small errands (e.g. pharmacy, post office) would be helpful. Light housework is expected, including tidying away toys and clothes, washing up/clearing up after cooking and meals, laundry of the kids' and your own clothes, keeping your room/bathroom clean and doing your bit to keep the house clean and organised.

You would receive $320 pocket money per week. Lodging (including internet) and all meals with the family would be covered. It would be advisable that you take out insurance in your home country. This should cover you for a variety of events whilst you are in Australia - in particular medical and vehicle damage (our vehicles are only covered by 3rd party insurance and so in the event of an accident caused by you with damage to our car, there may be significant costs).

We would like you to commit to staying with us for a minimum of 6 months and will offer a bonus payment at the end of a 6+ month satisfactory stay.

Before contacting us, please ensure that you meet the visa requirements for Australia (depending on your nationality, that would be Working Holiday visa subclass 417 or Work and Holiday visa subclass 462) so that we are able to host you here.

Accommodation

Our home is renovated, with new kitchen and bathrooms. You would have your own room and access to a bathroom used mainly by you. We have green space around the house to wander around in, exercise or lounge in the hammock to enjoy mountain views. The weather in this region is typically cold and wet in winter with the summers hot and dry. Autumn and spring are beautiful here.
We live on a large property in the Macedon Ranges, outside the friendly town of Gisborne and close to a train station, so we feel that with kangaroos greeting us in the mornings and a direct train line into Melbourne we have the best of both country and city life. You can hop on a train (walking/cycling distance to station) to go to Melbourne and explore the city (1h train ride into the city centre, so more of a daytrip than a quick visit). Nearby country towns are also worth a visit. The low mountain ranges are picturesque and you can go for nice walks. The Macedon Ranges also have spectacular gardens, wineries, arts and events. You could join a sports club or sign up for classes (eg English classes in Melbourne).
