Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Hello!

Thank you for reading this.

My name is Bob and I live in Northampton, England. It is about 70km north of London. You can look me up on social media. Alternately, you could also search my name, and my website will come up. Reading the section on “About Bob” will give you another insight. My post code is NN2 8TA - the last right-hand house in a close.
I am 73 years old, a retired headteacher and magistrate, with a well-developed sense of humour. I live in a quiet neighbourhood in a small, open-plan three bed detached house, about 300m from a bus stop for town. After 44 years of marriage to the love of my life, breast cancer came along. An extremely painful 4-year journey followed. I will not describe that time. For now, I must be grateful that I have loved and have been loved. No man can ask for more. I will never be in another relationship. However, although too old to be a worry, I am a single man. Perhaps that is a deciding factor for you and I quite understand.

All food and drink will be paid for by me. You can sit with me as I order my weekly delivery. In the evenings I have a glass of wine.
I have a cleaner (also a friend) who spends three hours every week hoovering, ironing and changing my sheets. During the week you might like to occasionally spend a few minutes hoovering (no more) and if you could cook the odd meal, that would be great but not essential. I eat Tesco meals for one, from the microwave.
I have many friends, mostly linked to my many years of sport and teaching. They are extremely generous, inviting me into their houses but I do not like to be a burden. However, I am lonely in my own house. In more recent times I have hosted three Ukrainians. In each case I gave my monthly council grant straight to them. I am not rich, but I do not need the money.
I do have a painful neck condition which can make me tired too soon. It as a result of me having played rugby for too long. Self inflicted I'm afraid.

I am a social individual with a young outlook.
So, a dominant part of your role would simply be keeping me company and to be there if I experience some sort of medical emergency. Perhaps we could watch a film together in the evening and occasionally walk Charlie.. All terms are negotiable. For instance, I am sure you will want to explore the area.
Looking after Charlie on a Wednesday afternoon would be wonderful.

Hello…..
I am 73 years old, a retired headteacher and magistrate who has hosted fellow Ukrainians three times so far. I am happy to talk on WhatsApp.
I live in Northampton, England. Sadly, it is not an exciting place. My post code is NN2 8TA for Google Maps. It’s a very safe area. There is a half hourly bus service into town and the stop is about 300m away.
4½ years ago I lost the most wonderful woman in the world to breast cancer (after 48 years of marriage). It was a terrible time. However, I am lucky enough to have loved and been loved. No man can ask for more. So, yes, I am a single man. Sorry about that but, of course, I would enjoy your company. I am a good listener, so of you wish for a break from your circumstances, this might be an idea.
You would have your own room plus TV. Unlimited Wi-Fi plus Sky Q, Netflix, Disney+, Paramount, Apple and Prime.
I have four grandchildren. Two grandsons in Tanzania and two granddaughters in Thailand.
I have put 2-6 months for length of stay as I cannot imagine anyone staying longer.

The reasons for wanting somebody here are threefold:
1. I have many friends but feel lonely at home. I have always loved sport and played rugby for far too long. I was warned there would be a cost and now I have a painful neck. So, there you are. Self-inflicted.
2. My family all work abroad.. I see them in the summer for short periods and hopefully at Christmas. They have worked all round the world which has been great for my love of travel. If we talk further, I will give you my Facebook page so you can see everything. I spent Christmas day on top of Table Mountain (Cape Town) with my two grandsons (8 & 6 years old). The 30C heat and blue skies
3. Any cooking would be a bonus but not essential. Simply being around is enough.
So, a large part of the job description would be keeping me company. On occasions perhaps watch a film with me in the evenings when I have a glass of wine. However, I do not want you by my side all the time. That would be a prison sentence for any poor soul. Therefore, I ask for some command of English. To me, the most important attributes are, a sense of humour (vital), generosity of spirit and managing to stay positive. I am happy to laugh at myself and can only hope for the same in others.
I have a cleaner who comes to the house for 3 hours each week. So, I would only ask only for an occasional two minutes of hoovering for dog hair (Charlie is 12 and extremely friendly.).
I walk Charlie each day at the nearby river and would appreciate company. Also, dog sitting on a Wednesday afternoon would be great.
I live in a small, open-plan, three bed, detached house, so it will be difficult to hide without being in your own bedroom. One bedroom (not yours) is very small. Your room would have a double bed and a TV with Sky, Netflix, Prime, Paramount and Disney+. I will buy a pair of Bluetooth headphones/buds if required. There is unlimited internet.
I love to travel and am lucky to have seen a lot of the world. Unfortunately, it’s not as much fun going alone. In January I went to a 5* all-inclusive hotel in Egypt. It was cheaper to pay for two people than opt for the single supplement. The sun, beach and Red Sea were good but there was always the lack of a kindred spirit. Somebody to laugh alongside me. Unfortunately, that is just the way it is for me.
Finally, I am not rich but comfortably off. I will pay for all food, drinks, warmth. Plus, you will require some finance. To be discussed.
Finally, trust underlies everything. I understand. You might like to know that I had two Ukrainian refugees (Mum 40, daughter 20) staying with me for over two months. Unfortunately, when the dad/husband was called up for an army medical, all agreements were abandoned. I drove them to the airport and paid for their flight home. An awful situation.
Consequently, I have been tested and inspected in every way by my local council, to ensure I am “safe”.
This has been lengthy, I apologise for that.
Do you know the world record for a drum solo? I will tell you. It is 5 hours and 21 minutes. Held by the little boy who sat behind me on a flight from Dar Es Salaam to Abu Dhabi.

Two daughters, four grandchildren. Living abroad.
One sister living about 100 miles away.
Relations in Scotland.
I grew up in a wonderful small fishing town called St Ives in Cornwall. Now it is an expensive holiday centre.
I am interested in sport. Very much rugby.
I play Bridge (badly) at Northampton Bridge club.
I also play golf (even worse).

-----------------------------------------------------
See above.

The website is telling me I have to write more but I think I have pretty well covered it.
I have two cars and a local bus service to the town centre is 2 minutes walk.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE main bathroom/shower is upstairs but there is another one in my small conservatory. Energy prices have recently tripled so I will not heat that one - cold in winter but still useful.
A fairly small double room with a double bed. The walls are pretty thin, so Bluetooth headphones required bought by me.

Job Description

What am I looking for? Well, ideally, good company with a sense of humour. I am a good listener so, if you simply need a break from circumstances, this might be an idea. Not a traditional au pair or caregiver role. I am offering £1200 for two months, payable as you wish and negotiable. I figure two months might be enough for you!
If things go well, I would enjoy a trip to London, seeing the sights and taking in a west-end show, is a distinct possibility. You would, of course, have your own hotel room.

Disadvantages:

1. Spending time with an old git. Note: I enjoy exploring new music but am slow at taking it in.
2. Small, open-plan house. The only real escape (from me) would be your room.
3. Small garden.
4. Good area to live but boring, although you would be welcome to walk Charlie with me, by the river.
5. All our renovations to the kitchen and other areas of the house were abandoned by me after I lost Catherine. I could not see the point.
6. I like a warm house. A hereditary condition of all men in my family.
7. If, for some reason, you are young, then I will need your parents to be involved. There must be no hint of deception. Honesty is vital.
8. I've been alone for 4½ years, so the house is disorganised.
