Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Future Au Pair,

Hello and welcome! I’m so glad you're considering joining our family.

We live in a beautiful part of midcoast Maine, just a short walk to the ocean and a quick drive to a small, friendly seaside town full of local shops, events, and charm. We’re currently finishing construction on a new home, and once we move in, we’re hoping to welcome an au pair who’s excited about both helping with childcare and sharing culture.

I’m a single father of three wonderful kids. My two older children (ages 7 and 11) live with us part-time, and you’ll spend time with them—but your main focus will be my youngest, a sweet and cheerful 2-year-old boy. He’s very easygoing and well-loved in our community—you’re likely to hear his name on every walk through town!

He doesn’t have family connections to his mother's Chinese heritage. That’s a big reason we’re specifically looking for a Mandarin-speaking au pair with a strong connection to Chinese culture. I’d love for him to grow up hearing the language, tasting the food, and learning about traditions from someone who enjoys sharing them. If you enjoy cooking or teaching little ones, this will be a very special place to be.

Cultural exchange is deeply valued in our home. My daughter especially enjoys learning to cook, and we'd love for you to share your recipes and food traditions with us. We also enjoy family-style meals, weekly board game nights, casual hiking, and going to local family events together. There’s also at least one other nearby family hosting au pairs you could connect with that live within a reasonable walking distance.

I work part-time and mostly from home, so I’m often around, but your help will allow me to take on a bit more work and focus on some projects. We’re hoping to find someone who enjoys being part of family life—not just working scheduled hours but building real relationships, traveling with us when possible, and creating memories together. You’ll have your own private bedroom and we plan to provide a car for a confident driver.

If you’re looking for a meaningful experience, want to help raise a kind and curious little boy, and would enjoy becoming part of a warm, active family life by the sea—we’d love to hear from you.

Warmly,
Jake

Job Description

Your main responsibility would be caring for my 2-year-old son—he’s a joyful, calm child who loves people and is well known in our town. Daily care includes playtime, meals, diapering, naps, and joining local playgroups or going for short walks. There may be some light involvement with my older two children when they’re home, but most of your time will be spent with the youngest.

I’m hoping to find someone who speaks Mandarin and is excited to share Chinese culture through everyday interactions—songs, language, cooking, and simple traditions. Light help with meals and cleanup is appreciated. If you enjoy being part of a close family, participating in everyday life, and traveling with us, I think you'll find this a good fit. A driver’s license is helpful, as I plan to provide a vehicle for the right person.

Accommodation

You will have a private, furnished bedroom with a locking door. A bathroom is located just across the hall. The room includes a desk and quiet space for study or personal time.

You’ll have full access to the kitchen and are welcome to prepare your own meals, though we typically share meals together. The home includes high-speed Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, heating and cooling. A second vehicle will be available for your daily use, and while we’re in a small town, it’s walkable to the ocean, local docks, a small market, a restaurant, and another nearby host family with au pairs.

We encourage you to explore and socialize—there are many local events and a welcoming community. Guests must be approved in advance, and overnight visitors are generally not allowed to maintain a peaceful and family-focused home.
