Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Future Au Pair,

Thank you for considering becoming a part of our family! We’re excited to connect with someone who is kind, reliable, and enjoys spending time with young children — someone who’s ready to jump into the rhythms of family life and share in both the fun and the work that comes with it.

We live on a beautiful island in a rural part of southern Ontario, Canada. It’s peaceful here — surrounded by nature, water, and wide open skies — and we love the balance of quiet living with the occasional adventure. While we’re a bit off the beaten path, there’s plenty of charm and warmth in our community, and we’d love to share that with you.

We have three young kids: a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 1-year-old. They’re full of energy, curiosity, and love. Life with them is busy, but also full of joy, learning, and lots of silly moments. Your role as an au pair would be a big help in caring for them — playing, reading, helping with routines — and just being a calm, kind presence in their day-to-day life.

We also share our home with a large but very friendly dog named Gili and an outdoor-only cat named Nutmeg. They’re part of the family too, and we hope you’ll enjoy having animals around as much as we do.

We understand that coming to live with a new family in a new place is a big step, and we’re committed to making this a positive and enriching experience for you. We believe in treating our au pair like a family member — with respect, kindness, and open communication. We also love the idea of cultural exchange and would be thrilled to learn about your background, language, and traditions, while also sharing Canadian life and culture with you.

If you’re someone who enjoys nature, doesn’t mind a quieter lifestyle, and is comfortable with young children (and a big dog!), we think you might be a great fit here. We’re looking forward to getting to know you better and hopefully welcoming you into our home.

Warmly,
Melissa, Justin & kids

Job Description

About the Role

We’re looking for an au pair to join our family and help care for our three young children — ages 5, 3, and 1 — while we manage our small business. This role is ideal for someone who loves being around young kids, is calm and dependable, and enjoys being part of a close-knit family in a quiet, natural setting.

Main Responsibilities:

Caring for the children during the day (playing, reading, walks, crafts, helping with naps and routines)
Preparing simple meals and snacks for the kids
Light household help related to the children (tidying up play areas, kids’ laundry, occasional help with family meals)
Occasionally helping get the older children ready for school
Being a warm, reliable, and engaged presence in the home

Preferred Skills & Experience:

Experience caring for young children (especially under age 5)
Basic first aid and CPR certification
Spanish-speaking is a big plus, as we’d love to expose our kids to another language — but it’s not a requirement
Comfortable living in a rural area and spending time outdoors
A driver’s license is a bonus, though not required

Additional Opportunities:
If you’re interested in earning extra income during your free time, there may be part-time work available through our family business (cottage cleaning, property upkeep, organizing, or helping with small renovation tasks — all depending on your interest and comfort level).

We’re looking for someone who is responsible, kind, flexible, and excited to be part of our day-to-day life. In return, we’ll offer you a welcoming home, fair and respectful working conditions, and the chance to experience life in a unique and beautiful part of Canada.

Accommodation

About Our Home

We live in a four-bedroom family home on a quiet, nature-rich island in southern Ontario. Our home is cozy, comfortable, and full of activity with our three little ones, but it’s also a peaceful and welcoming place to relax. We have a large yard where the kids (and dog!) love to play, and we’re just a short drive from several beautiful beaches, plus a few small local shops and restaurants.

The au pair will have her own private bedroom with a tv and room to store personal belongings, and once renovations are complete, she will also have her own full bathroom for added privacy. Until then, the main bathroom is shared with the family. You'll also share common areas like the kitchen and living room, and we want you to feel completely at home in those spaces. We have unlimited wifi throughout the house.

While our dog Gili lives both inside and outside, he spends most of his time outdoors. When he is inside, he prefers to stay in one designated room, so he is never in the bedrooms or kitchen. If you're not used to dogs, this setup usually makes things feel comfortable and low-pressure.

Inside our barn, we also have a small indoor skateboard ramp and a climbing wall — fun and creative spaces for the kids to burn off energy, especially during the winter months.

Our island is truly unique — much of the land is protected due to the rare and diverse wildlife found here. We don’t have malls or chain restaurants, but instead enjoy quiet roads, beautiful landscapes, and a slower pace of life. From April to December, we travel to the mainland by ferry (a 1.5-hour trip). In winter, a small passenger plane operates flights to Windsor International Airport multiple times a day. We're also close to the U.S. border, which opens up great travel opportunities.

This rural setting is ideal for someone who appreciates nature, calm environments, and family life. We hope our home will feel like a peaceful and welcoming retreat where you can enjoy both your work and your downtime.
