Welcome Letter to the Au Pair

Dear Granny Au-Pair,

We are a family of five living in a small town in Germany, and we are looking for a loving granny to support us in our daily life 1-3 hours a day except weekend.

It is important to us that you feel comfortable and that your support is in a relaxed and enjoyable way. It would be wonderful if you could occasionally cook lunch for us (if you like) and simply be there for the children. Since our children already speak English, we would really appreciate it if you could communicate with them in English.

We offer you your own room on the ground floor of our big house (230 m²), with your own terrace and access to our beautiful garden. Additionally, we will provide you with a car and cover the costs of a language course if you would like to learn German.

We are not looking for a nanny. We are looking for a granny.

The difference between a nanny and a granny is that a nanny signs an employment contract and gets paid like an employee. A granny, on the other hand, does not receive an employment contract and does not get paid—there is also no pocket money involved.

Instead, you will get free accommodation, meals, use of the car, and anything else you might need while staying with us. We will pay for your language course, cover your travel expenses, and provide you with a monthly public transport ticket—or you can simply use our car.

However, we cannot pay you because it is forbidden in Germany. The moment we pay you, we would have to sign a contract with you, which would also mean registering you as an employee and paying social security contributions in Germany.

If we were to give you pocket money without registering you, that would be considered undeclared work (Schwarzarbeit)—and that is not an option for us because we will get a big problem.

We also don’t need someone to work 40 hours a week.

What we need is someone who can help us for 1 to 3 hours a day except weekend—maybe cook lunch sometimes or spend 1 to 2 hours with the kids. That’s it. You will have a lot of freedom and plenty of free time.

If you enjoy gardening, you are welcome to take care of the garden, but that’s completely up to you. You can also go out, explore Germany, and enjoy your time here however you like.

We would be delighted to get to know you and welcome you into our family!

Warm regards,
Monika

Job Description

The main task for our future granny would be to take care of the children- sometimes while we are working. If you enjoy cooking, you could also prepare lunch for us from time to time. However, we are very flexible, easygoing, and uncomplicated. We can always discuss and agree on what works best—whether you want to cook lunch regularly or if we take turns.

Of course, we would really appreciate it if you could prepare lunch, keep an eye on the children, and help tidy up the kitchen afterward. These are our general wishes, but everything can be discussed and adjusted together to make sure everyone feels comfortable.

Accommodation

The candidate’s room is located on the ground floor with direct access to the terrace. It is a bright and comfortable private room. The private bathroom, which includes a shower, is also on the ground floor and is exclusively for her use.

None of us sleep on the ground floor—our bedrooms are all upstairs—so she would have that area to herself at night. The ground floor also includes the kitchen, living room, an extra playroom, and a utility room, along with her room and bathroom.
